I am working on a complete front axle build of a disk brake 40 and the knuckles and hubs are pretty corroded. Does anyone have a decent set for sale or trade?

Thanks
Randy

I would be very surprised if a knuckle corroded so bad you couldn't use them. I'd look at having them hot tanked or media blasted first, then see if they need replacing. We're talking about big chunks of cast iron here.

Same deal with the hubs. The things to look out for with them is if they're warped where the bearing races go, if not, treat as I mentioned above.

Thanks rblank - I'm concerned about the corrosion where the gaskets sit. There are slight irregularities in the surface due to rust. I suppose I could sand them down a bit but do not want to risk changing the mating surface too much in fear of the gaskets leaking. Maybe it's not as bad as I think, just don't want to go through all the rehab efforts and end up having them leak.

Just go easy with some emory cloth and it should be fine. Permatex can be your friend....just don't over do it. :D

And unless something is different on 40 axles than on mini truck, the only thing that should be in the knuckle and hub is bearing grease. The axle tube seal is what's going to keep gear oil out of the knuckle. If you're worried about water getting in, open the knuckles up after every deep water crossing. You should probably be doing that anyway on your post trip inspection, but always easier said than done.

 if anybody knows about water and junk in nuckels its you Roger right? :D
You need to put up that picture...

Randy if you are doing a complete rebuild do yourself a favor
and order the axle tube seals that Marlin Crawler has designed.
I put a set in my 4Runner and they are super! Mark Whatley
recommends them in last months TT. Something like $7 for a pair.
Order a few extra sets to sell to your friends! (I'll take a set)

Yeah that totally sucked. Glad I opened it up though. Here's what he's talking about:

And that was the GOOD side!!

I bought the Marlin seals like lane talked about $8.50 each. Small price for insurance. Everyone raves about them. I should probably order some spares too.

aaaaugh! my eyes!

Randy, the axle I used for my front was so rotted that the spring perches themselves had huge holes in them. The knuckles turned out to be fine. Good luck with your project.

If you need a set, you can take a trip up here, there is a local junkyard with 4 early mini axles in it.

LOL Dan.

I'm going to stick with what I have. After some elbow grease and blasting the parts are looking better than I thought.

So when are you going to take up wheeling again :princess:?

Randy
I use a little aluminum based bondo on my rusty axle ends
fills up the pits and lets the seals do their job
never had an issue
good luck

Are you talking about the "bells" on the ends of the tubes?
