i need a 4 speed transmission compatible with 3B . i need it to fit in my 79 fj40 diesel conversion.

You can swap in a 3B input shaft and use the old tranny if you want. It'll save shipping a heavy tranny all over the country side.

If you have freight connections I could probably hook you up with an H41 from down here in Guatemala. The H41 is what every 3B had down here.

If you have a stock 4 speed with a case already attached in your 40,
you should be able to swap in b series transmission input shaft, to your current setup.
This would allow you to reuse the existing transmission, mounts, transfer case, flanges etc.

If you don't want to go thru the trouble I still have a 81 3b h42 for sale.

Food for thought......

My transmission is designed for a split transfer case.

I don't think a 79 has the split case, it came around mid 80.

I believe the rear mount is also different on my transmission, than it is on yours.

It can be fitted in a 79, but won't be a direct bolt in.

You would need to fab up a 80+fj40 style cross member.

What can also be done is use the complete guts of the 3B tranny and the output shaft of the old 2F 4 speed. That would allow you to run your single piece transfer case. The tranny housing is the same for either a split case transfer or single piece transfer, the difference is the split transfer is the tranny rear cover and the single piece transfer has a separate rear cover.

gord, will this be a direct bolt up for my 79 fj40 that i am putting a 3b in? Larry

the transmission came off a 3B so i would imagine so.....i am not sure if your driveshafts/flanges will be the same, maybe someone can answer this for you

A split case tranny will not bolt up to the single peice transfer unless the output shaft is changed.

thanks cruiser-guy. don't let me buy wrong parts. did you say you could get one in guatemala that would be a bolt in so i don't have to make a mount, move shifter or change driveshafts?

IF you are looking for a single piece case behind a H42 that connects to a diesel, the one you want was in a Canadian spec BJ40 from 1978 to 1980 only. JDM BJ41s (77-81) will work too. Kinda rare. The alternative is to use a split case but you'll have to work out a parking brake. This is what Gord has for sale. It came on BJ42s from 81 to 82 and BJ60s of the same era.

A split case transfer type tranny would not necessarily be wrong, you just need to be aware that it is not a bolt in. A friend of mine from Honduras has an H41 gear set only (you pull your H42 gearset and install his in your tranny case) for a "B" series engine. I asked him to PM you about it. The gearset is already stateside so shipping should not be impossible.

How is your current tranny mounted? The BJ40's with the single piece transfer had a bellhousing mount. I have a spare bellhousing like that if you need it. The mount doesn't look anything like the mount on a 2F, at least not like it did on the FJ55 before we swapped engines.

I could get an H41 down here in Guatemala as well but shipping would kill the deal. I think the H41 is a good tranny with the 3B. That's what I'm running in the FJ55 right now and also what will be in the FJ45LV. Both also have the single piece transfer and driveline parking brake.

If you are creative and mix and match parts you could make this with a "B" series input shaft in your current tranny.

i have the shaft but i hear it's not a fun job to install.

Not an easy job but not impossible. Get a set of brass drifts, you WILL need them. I did mine with my shop class in about a week or so of classes. I could have done it myself in a day.

Afe you still looking for the tranny? I have an H41 for a "B" series engine (B/3B) and single piece transfer case that I picked up yesterday. I could bring it up in the summer if you want.

that sound like what i need. how much and what is your route back to B.C.? maybe i could meet up with you. Larry

I have a 1981 H41 behind a 2B with only 120K Miles. I was thinking of going 5 speed. Let me know if youa re interested. It has the split T case too.

Larry, the scale tells me the tranny without transfer, shifter or packaging, weighs in at 130lbs. Let me know.
