Hello ONSC folks. I'd like to enlist some help/input on a last minute Outer Banks trip this weekend. My wife, 2 kids (2 1/2 yr and 9 months) and I have decided to take the long road to get from Northern VA to Myrtle Beach, SC. At first we were just going to take the wife's Outback but then remembering seeing the pics from your spring tide rides and figured we'd explore taking the 80 so we can ride along the beach as much as possible. We'll probably start the trip this Friday by driving to my sister in-law's in Norfolk and then continuing on to NC from there.

I'm just starting to look online for info but I figured I'd drop a line in here to get some input direct from the folks who've done it before. I'd like to travel the whole length of the Outer Banks if possible (and if the kids cooperate). I don't think camping is in the cards right now so commercial accommodations would be required along the way (is this feasible?). How long does it take to get from North to South? Do I have to deal with specific times for ferries to get from one island to the next or can we take our time and not be stranded at a dock over night because we missed the one and only 9am ferry? I know, based on the tide ride thread in here, there's certain permits to be had prior to getting on the beach now. Can those be obtained at the time of entry or do they need to be obtained ahead of time?

Unfortunately I don't know what I don't know so I won't be too offended if you tell me this is just a pipe dream but I'd like to pull it off if possible. All comments and suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

It's extremely possible. You can go from the NC/VA line to the Hatteras Ferry easily in a day (about 3 hours non stop). It just depends on when/where you stop. We usually hit the lighthouses and Jockey's Ridge.

There are places to stay up and down the area, hotels, B&B's, KOA cabins, etc. At this time of the year you should have no problems finding vacancy, but some might be closed for the season. Especially our favorite, Frisco Woods campgrounds, which also does have cabins.

Only section you'll need a pass (and watch a 7 minute video) to drive is in Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Hatteras Island and Ocracoke. There's only a few locations you can get a pass, look them up online at the NPS website. The North part near Duck and Corolla, are still free.. for now.

Ferry Information is here:

Patrick, the Cedar Island ferry from Ocracoke is one you have to make a reservation. Definitely check Brian's ferry schedule post. When do you want to arrive in Myrtle Beach and when do you want to be back in NOVA? That will determine whether you will have anytime for beach riding or playing tourists. Maybe Yukon LX can chime in about how long it would take from Norfolk to Myrtle Beach. Wilmington to Myrtle is about 2 hours but not sure about Cedar Island to Wilmington. You have a 40 minute ferry ride to Ocracoke and a 2 hour ferry ride to Cedar Island.
I would get info on the beaches around Corolla to drive since they are still free, but not sure you have time to get a permit to ride the Hatteras Island beaches (and spend $50 for that right). Give feedback on above question and I'm sure everyone here will give some good advice.
Good luck and go for it!

Thanks for the replies. Right now the plan is to stay Friday night in Norfolk and then start the fun part of the trip Saturday. We'd like to get to MB by Tuesday or Wednesday so 4-5 days to make the trip depending on how the kids do. On the way home we'll just take 17 to 40 to 95 .

Can't believe I missed that thread. Thanks for all the tips. One last thing, what are my chances I'll get stuck in the sand given that I won't be straying too far off the path? I don't have a hi-lift but was thinking about picking one up at IPOR on my way out of town tomorrow. I have a T handled shovel I'll be taking along as well as a 20,000 lbs Super Strap but that's about it for recover gear.

Air down your tires a little and you should be fine, just don't spin your tires if you feel like you're not moving... get out and dig some. If you spin, you'll dig yourself right up to your axles!

Pick up my new seats for me for my 40 on your way down haha

From where to where?. Would like to help out if its not too far out of the way.. Leaving in about 30 minutes though.

How was your OBX family vacation? Pics or it didn't happen! :flipoff2:

Ha! Was just getting around to posting some pics. On Saturday we rode almost all the way North on Corolla but stopped about 2 miles from that last grouping of homes on the North end. Saturday night we stayed at the Sanderling in Duck ($$ :bang:). Sunday we drove on the beach around Kitty Hawk but it was raining and the sand was soft and heavy. We drove the sand for about 7 miles before my AC couldn't keep up with the condensation and the wind shield fogged up. Plus the 9 month old started wailing so it was quite the stressful situation. I swear my transmission was going to give out then reach his hand from under the rig and slap me in the face for putting him through that. Thankfully we found a ramp and pulled off the beach and let all the nerves settle. Just something unnerving about riding on the beach with your wife and 2 young kids and no other people or trucks as far as you can see in either direction. After that we took it easy and went to the Wright brothers museum followed by the Lost Colony on Roanoke Island. Sunday night we stayed in Manteo. Monday morning we decided to skip Hatteras and drive on through to the ferry to Ocracoke. We did pick one ramp somewhere along the way to just take a look at the ocean and hang out for a few minutes. No way was I going to pay $50 for the privilege. That was the last beach driving we did. Monday and Tuesday night we stayed in Ocracoke right on Silver Lake in a cottage at the Captain's Landing. It was nice not having to unpack the truck and repack it 14 hours later. Wednesday we took the ferry to Cedar Island and headed South down the cost to Myrtle Beach. All said it was a great adventure. We had no real plan and no reserved accommodations but being that it was off season we didn't have a problem with this at all.

Thanks for all the tips. I think next time I want to do the beach driving it will have to be with you guys on the Tide Ride.

Here's a few picks from the point and shoot. The SLR uses CF and my laptop only has a SD slot.

Beautiful pictures Patrick. The house in the second pic probably has a short life span and the Manteo sunrise pics are awesome.

I know what you mean about driving on the beach with no one in sight and thinking "Oh s**t, I hope I don't get stuck and the tides coming in"! I had a nephew that lost a jeep at the Hatteras Point when he was night fishing and didn't pay attention. Next thing he knew, it was floating 20 feet out in the ocean.

Sounds like this adventure turned out the way it should, congratulations!
