I've started a thread on the 60 series side, but wanted to share my experience and get tips with the paint folks on here. I've painted a few cars in my life, but they were under heavy guidance from experiened painters who would help with all the details. This will be my first solo attempt (besides good folks on this forum).....choose all the materials, strip, manage though the myriad of coats and methods and end up in my local rent-a-booth for base and clear. It will likely take some time as I work full time and we run a family business (which we will use the truck for once done as kind of adventising).

The main reason for the respray was the damaged hood and roof clear coat and the beginings of roof rail rust. I was initially going to paint those only but as I started trying to match paint I realized that it would be impossible to match. My driver's door and rear hatch were also pretty dinged up.

Here is a few photos of where I am at today - windows are out (including w/s), doors are off, hinges and hardware all off. Everything is bagged and tagged and I will be zinc coating all the hardware. I am planning on priming the hood/roof fully (primer etcher) and spot priming the rest of the body where I am either down to primer and where I have any filler. I plan on base coating and clearing the door jambs and inside of tailgates, reinstalling doors and rear gate and taking the whole truck to a paint booth for final base and clear coats.

That's the plan. My questions/concerns right now are around the priming and leveling the whole thing out. Seems like there is a lot of different approaches here (from spray one coat of primer and sand out with 600 and you are good to go all the way to 3-4 coats with wet sanding!). Also, still have not figured out how i will spot prime smaller repairs and ensure that once base coat goes on it will be perfect.....I'm trying not to end up priming the whole truck if not necessary.

I live in North Vancouver, BC so planing on painting at the local KMS Tools booth if any locals have any experience. I also bought all my supplies throug them, which I will post later.

Few quick updates, I am struggling with posting photos...grrr. I've been away for work off and on for a few weeks, but managed to get to SOR in person and pick up a most of the clips, grommets, door handles, and gaskets (windshield, doors, taillamp and mirrors), so I am super stoked. Here is a bit more pics of the progress with the door jambs. I have also done the rear tailgate opening. Next up will be the rhs of the truck and I'm ready to prime the jambs, roof and hood.

and an example of the jamb. One tip I would pass on is - take off your hinges if you are this far. Mine were not painted under and thus rusty, that would be a horrible place to have to weld metal just from the alignment point of view.

I use a Festool (I do quite a bit of woodworking) and it's been amazing. Basically it's virtually rust free. I am also using long/short blocks for the larger surfaces by hand, but try to use the Festool where I can.

I wish I took my doors and glass out out when I painted mine, it really makes a difference.
