Hello all, this is my first post on here so I suppose a small intro to my truck is in order.

Firstly I am based in the UK; about a month ago I became the proud owner of a 1998 4.2L 100 series in maroon red. As with older trucks there are of course a few teething issues.

The most pressing issue is the wiper motor has packed up (I think the snow killed it!)

I’ve checked fuses and gone over the harness socket with a multimeter and the motor is getting 12v from the correct pins (judging by the schematic in the workshop manual). The wiper linkage is also fine and I can operate the wipers by hand with the mechanical link to the motor disconnected. The motor and gearbox seem like they are seized - the wipers are stuck fast and will not move.

This leads me to suspect the motor has failed - I could attempt to diagnose and repair but as a first port of call I wanted to try and find a replacement motor and gearbox assembly.

This seems to be proving difficult - motors off a 100 series are few and far between. So my questions are:

- For a part like this are there any obvious sources for getting a replacement?

- Are there any known refurbishment companies that might be able fix the motor?

- There are a lot of motors off of 90 series - they look pretty much identical however the serial numbers on the motor housing are slightly different - notably there is a large digit stamped on the motor (mine is 3) that does not match. Any idea if the motors are interchangeable?

Thank you for any help!

that is an uncommon failure , I would disconnected the motor and apply 12v to it to see if it is truly bad. I have never heard of one going bad before, but I am sure it is possible.

Thanks for the reply.

It seems to be a bit of a mystery, I’ve disassembled most of the assembly and poked around with a multimeter. The motor was definitely getting a 12v supply, so something was a miss with it. The whole electronic assembly was full of grease which didn’t seem normal?!

Anyway I ended up getting one from a breakers yard and it works a treat.

It’s definitely an annoying issue for anyone else who has this problem as replacement motors are few and far between. Best option seems to be to find someone breaking one for parts and make sure serial numbers etc match.

There are plenty of 90 series motors going however looking at the electronic schematics they are not compatible with the 100 (different pin layout) which is a shame!
