Windshield leak - lots of dash lights - what is behind the glovebox and how do I get to it?

Left my '03 at O'Hare for 9 days, thunderstorms today when I picked it up. The battery discharge light was flickering and blinking, but good voltage, so I ordered brushes on the way home. Now I'm getting ABS light, VSC lights, check engine light with code P1782, and water dripping in the passenger foot well. I can clear the trouble code and the VSC lights go away, for a while. Probably most concerning is that it sometimes doesn't shift into the highest gear so it is revving pretty high at highway speed.

I'm thinking my newish windshield was not installed properly despite buying all the seals from Beno for them to use. Looking through my FSM, I've not yet found what is behind the glovebox area or how to get to it. Any hints? I need to dry things out, and figure out what might be damaged, before I can start after the windshield installers about this.

I think there is a ECU behind there, but not sure what all it controls. You might start digging through the FSM regarding ECU's etc are located. I assume you removed the glovebox already?

Nope, just rolled in from a long drive and going to sleep on it. I didn't see locations of ECUs in my FSM, nor how to remove the glovebox, but perhaps a more careful study will reveal those details.

Engine ECU. It likely won't have suffered permanent damage. Dry it out, fix the leak, drive for another 100K.

Pulled the glovebox out, placed a heater fan to blow warm air on the ECU. Turned on the power to lower the windows, shut the door, waited for the running lights to turn off (headlights "on"). After a few minutes the headlights turned off, the parking lights refused to turn off regardless of switch position. Pulled the negative cable off the battery to shut off the lights. The ECU is pretty warm but I can hold my hand on it, it should dry out if it has water in it, despite very humid conditions. Heavy thunder storm rolling in right now.

Thanks for the thread, I noticed the hinge screws and just started taking things apart.

If I recall, there is a diagram in FSM detailing where the location is. Glovebox pretty easy, few screws and its out. Agree, tear it down, stick a fan in there and see if it corrects problem.... And fix windshield of course.

Turned off the heater/fan and let it all cool, reattached the battery, buttoned it up and drove to work with no dash lights. Some of my symptoms seem like engine control module, and some seem like body ECU, could be both I suppose.

It could be your body control module too. That's behind the radio. When they get wet, funny things happen.

Another new windshield is ordered, to be installed early Monday. They mentioned it could be my sunroof drain...? Unlikely that would be dripping in the middle of the footwell, but I should check those drains anyway. Drove home in the rain, still raining, so the LC is not leaving the garage.

Who are you using for your windshield?

That is a bit confusing. The windshield was installed along with some touch-up work, new hatch, rust repairs and detailing at a body shop. They told me they were using http://hendersonglass.com/, and I used them a month later for a new windshield on my 4Runner. I contacted the body shop about the window, and they had the windshield shop that does most of their windows call me and set up an appointment http://www.westmichiganautoglass.com/. I'm not totally sure this is the shop that did the windshield, but this is between the body shop and them so I'll just see what happens on Monday morning. Hopefully I'll be here, as I'm on call starting Sunday. They said they'd be bringing a new windshield in case they break the one they are removing, sounds like they'll do more than squeeze in more sealant.

Let me know how it goes as I'm about to install a new windshield too.

Scott, I lived in saint Joseph and had "Chet Nichols" in Benton Harbor do my glass. They are very good at what they do.

Thanks, maybe next time, the body shop is responsible for this one and I'll let them make good.

I'm at LAX, flying to Lihue in the morning, wife will have to deal with it. That's not a bad thing, she loves her Land Cruiser and knows car repair, started working at her dad's body shop as a toddler, and she seems to have a special hatred for windshield installers which this failure is not helping. She's very sweet and attractive, but very intelligent and has a hell of a temper. I'm just hoping the guy finishes the job without trying to bull**** her.

We just had our windshield replaced on our '14 Sienna by the recommended installer (Advantage Glass) of the Toyota dealer (Crown in Holland, MI). They had to come back two times after the initial install to get it right. Nice people willing to fix the problem, but you'd think they would have done it right the first time.

We've had trouble with Safelight, they don't come near our cars. Not sure if I've dealt with Advantage, doesn't sound impressive either. Looks like it's raining hard back home, wife drove our son's car this morning, hopefully this all gets done.

Patrick at West Michigan came on Monday, I was in LAX and called him, he says the sunroof drain is disconnected. He says he pulled back the headliner and can see the line is disconnected. I poured water down that drain on Saturday and it came out immediately behind the front tire, both sides, so you can say I'm suspicious and more than a little pissed off. He seems like he's straight-up, says he didn't pull the drain off, because he'd still have to fix the windshield if it ended up being the problem, and possibly pay for any damage to my computers. He claims the water from the drain is flowing down the A-pillar and out the bottom...? Is that even possible?

He says he called the body shop that did the other work, and they told him they had the headliner down and might have unplugged it. I called the body shop and they said they'd fix it. I got home from my trip a few hours ago and dropped off the truck for them to make it right.

I'll need to test it afterward. Carwash, pressure washer, ...? Possible rain tonight, maybe.
