Hi group I have a 1997 xl450 . I'm hearing what sounds like air coming in from the outside right at the door mirror area . I thought it might have been from a bad seal . I put a bead of rope wax on the out side between the door and the body of the car from the top to the bottom and all around the seal and plastic parts where it connects to the door ,all around the folding space of the mirror unit and a bead around the mirror itself and the unit to seal off any air from coming in . I got in from the passenger side to get into the driver seat . I went down the road and the noise was still there and the sound did not change at all so I know for sure its not a seal problem . It sounds as if the noise is coming from the air hitting the mirror itself . Does anyone make a aftermarket piece that will fit onto the front of the mirror unit that is more wind resistance ? Will any other mirror unit from different years fit on the xl450 ? My next step is to use some lab silicone putty and mold it over the front and put a sharp point on a cone shape and tape it down for a test run . What is everyone doing about this wind noise from the mirror unit ?

Before you build a wind deflector check your windshield seal. Place your hand on the glass from the inside and gently push it against the rubber seal. If it moves the sealant has deteriorated between the glass and rubber. I had a similar issue with wind noise and replaced all of my weatherstripping to find out it was coming from the windshield seal. Good luck with it these little things can be frustrating.

If your avatar is accurate, now might be a good time to mention to folks that this is not a stock 80 with a wind noise issue. It's had the body cut and a camper grafted onto it that protrudes over the cab and creates completely different airflow from an 80 series.

I have some wind noise as well from the drivers side mirror. Me thinks it might just be the small gaps in the mirrors housing that create whistling here and there. I will definitely check the windshield though.

Nothing like including all pertinent information along with a question!

In the past I've used masking tape to cover various between glass and door frame, door frame and body, windshield seals etc to isolate source of a wind noise.

Window track rubbers have been a source of wind noise for me in the past.

I've never noticed wind noise from my mirrors.

I once had a light bar on the front bumper of a car that whistled, I'd hear it through the drivers window. It didn't whistle from day one and it took me ages to track it down because the noise seemed to come from somewhere else.

mudgudgeon has it right, masking tape is the way to diagnose it. take a roll with you on a test drive and try one area at a time. it's possible that the noise is pretty far away from where you think it's coming from. check the hood, windsheild, headlights, window runs ETC.

Sorry should have added My truck is stock Its just a photo I like . I did put rope wax all the way around the door window glass. I just had a new windshield installed with the correct sealant all the way around . It was making the same noise before I changed the windshield and now the new one . I sealed off all the small spaces in the mirror folding joints . I guess the easiest thing to do is to just take the mirror unit off and see if that gets rid of the wind noise I'm hearing . I just thought someone had already figured out that its the mirror unit itself that was making a wind noise and found a way to get rid of it . does anyone know if the units from a newer year will fit on the lx450 ? I'm sure they had to change the shape of the unit to get rid of that noise it makes on the xl450 .

No I don't have a cover that goes under the mirror . Is this a add on thing ? Can you show me a photo of it ? I have a lx450 I was wondering if the newer 98-07 year xl470 would work .I noticed it has a different shape to it . I sealed every seal from the outside with rope wax so I know for sure air is not getting it . The wind noise I'm hearing is from mirror itself . It has to be the same noise on every xl450 . Everyone that has one has to hear this same wind noise because its not coming from and seals .

May not be the mirror, but rather the door seal getting leaky with age. You could spend the $$ and buy new seals, but I suggest trying this first, as it will both reduce the noise if they are the source and confirm if that's the case so that you're more certain that spending the money on seals is cost-effective.

I used screen window spline inserted into the flap of the seal and found that this killed better than 75% of the noise from the door.

Here's a pic of some packages of this stuff if you've never used it before. It's cheap and most any size should work for this purpose.

There is a TSB on this and the remedy is shimming the door seal if I recall correctly.

Interesting. That's essentially what inserting the screen spline material does. Is the TSB method different?

I think they were flatter pieces, but served a similar purpose.

@stevenmichael Did you ever find an improvement or resolution. I've owned a bunch of 80s and all have had this noise emanating from the side-view mirror area. I too have taped up the areas and tested - years ago I stuffed foam behind the plastic interior triangle, I've replaced glass runs and the exterior belt moldings. Note that there is an old TSB on the belt moldings where Toyota added foam in the are near the mirror. But most all of our trucks should have replacement belt mouldings installed, since the old ones deteriorate, that have the update already applied. Just curious if somehow you were able to find an improvement.

The noise isn't loud - just annoying at 40+mph. It's not the upper door frame as some other posts have addressed. Mine is the exact same as your original post on this thread. Seems that the mirror body itself is the issue, so I gave up trying to solve it.
