Wind noise after windshield replacement- W*hat* is the fix?

Update for you guys: They guy who originally installed this new windshield eventually refused to return my calls, until I got the insurance company involved, that is ;). At this point, he called me back literally within 5 minutes of speaking to the claims agent.

So he has me come back to his shop (keep in mind this is the SIXTH time I have been there over this windshield) at which point I confront him about lying to me that he had installed a windshield in this type of vehicle before. He continues to lie to me until he realizes OOPS, I just made this customer wait 3+ months to have a special-sized rivet gun made. How could he have done this install before without the proper tool?

Anyway, I let him have another go at it since I was already there, and there was no reduction in the wind noise at all. I called the insurance company, and they plugged me in with another shop who installed new glass and all new factory trim pieces. BAM- wind noise is gone! :bounce:

Ironically, the original installer called me just last week and left a voicemail saying "I guess that solved the problem", not knowing I had already had the job re-done elsewhere. I considered calling him back, but just don't have the respect or patience for this guy anymore. I guess he will get the picture when the insurance company docks him $1500.

rwheelz, glad you finally got yours fixed. As for the "caulking" job I just got. There was about a 40% improvement but I am still considering having the whole thing replaced. The patch only cost 35 bucks so at least it was a pretty cheap improvement.

Good news! The installer found the issue as soon as he came back out to check it over. One rivet not seating flat. He went ahead and replaced the entire passenger side molding again while he was there with all new rivets and trim paying extra close attention to each one making sure they seat perfectly.

Noise is gone! I am once again, one happy 100 driver!

I've had a similar experience when I purchased my '03 LX470 with 40K on it, it came with a new OEM w/shield and the wind noise was much more noticeable than the '98 470 I had owned previously. Anyway, after stopping a decent size rock I needed a replacement w'shield and the local dealer put me on to their glass man. Having the job done through insurance was a bonus, the guy arrived at my home to do the job (he pre warned me that the truck shouldn't be driven for a while, ideally 24hours, after the job to let the sealants set properly) and on inspecting the vehicle said "I bet you get a heck of a lot of wind noise!" Yep, sure do, how's that? He pointed out the replacement glass had slid down maybe 1/4" or so, under its own weight before the sealant had set and bonded. He pointed out the small gap between the top trim and roof line and assured me that the new job would be done properly. After setting the new w/shield and replacing screws with rivets he ran multiple strips of tape to hold the new glass up and in place so it couldn't slip down. Sure enough, wind noise problem solved. I didn't take any before measurements of the gap, but the new glass certainly sits up higher (very small gap between trim and roof) than before. Anyone suspecting wind noise due to glass slipping down might experiment with running a strip of duct tap over the top glass/roof junction to see (or hear?) if the noise is reduced? If you need glass done in the Charlotte NC area talk to Charlie Edwards of All Glass Services, 7043099824. No affiliation with him, just recommending a person who did a job well.

This is driving me insane! I have read every thread on here that I can find. This is a 2003 LX470 and the windshield had to be replaced due to a crack. The car has nightvision and this was a $1500 job.

The installer used all new parts for install- I discussed the process with him prior to the install with information I found in threads here on IH8MUD. Brand new trim, rubber strips that get intalled over the rivets, etc... I have been back to this guy 3 times. He has taken the trim entirely off and redone it all, but the wind noise persists.

It is sort of located at the bottom pass side, but is very diffuse. Overall, the truck is just MUCH noisier than it was previously. As an example, my brand new Subaru was noisier than our 2003 LX when I bought it, but is now silent in comparison. The noise can be heard by 35mph and can be heard just sitting facing into the wind on a gusty day. Occasionally, I hear a "tone" when driving fast on the highway on a windy day. It is incredibly obnoxious!

Suggestions? The glass guy is helpful, but is frustrated himself. We agreed to both seek out sources of information for possible fixes. He planned to call the office where they train people or something!

I had my windshield replaced on a 2011 Ford E250. Immediately, noticed annoying wind noise. Called the installer (a large franchise, Phillips). They came out and replaced the window trim. Problem not solved, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out where the noise was coming from. No water leaks and my mechanics stethoscope didn't find any obvious problem area. Called back installer and requested a new windshield, which they did. Noise was worse and driving me mad. I found this forum and decided to put duct tape around my molding and take the van for a ride. Wind noise gone!. Called back installer talked to shop manager and offered to buy OEM Trim if they would install it. He said he had a softer trim he would install that should work. Took van to his shop and had another windshield installed with new softer trim. WIND NOISE GONE!

These trucks are picky about windshield installs - had one done by a major nation-wide company and they had to do it twice to get it right. Not a year later, another chip that became a crack quickly, so I called a different company and they got it right the first time.

Aerodynamics are tough to predict, but any trim that changes the airflow will likely generate noise.

It's been really nice reading about all of the windshield replacement issues on the forum today, especially since I just made an appointment to get mine replaced
Couldn't be more excited right now.......

Same thing I am experiencing after getting a new windshield replaced this weekend. I was driving in residential 25-30MPH and could hear a ton of wind noise. I called the installer and they said those LCs are tricky with the moulding. He sure didn't say that at the start of the install.

I am very particular with installers. I always make sure they have the little rivet gun, if they don't you will either get wind noise or a cracked windshield. Other than that they just have to take their time and give them some space so they can swear at it. :hillbilly: Seriously, it takes a good installer several hours (allow for 4) to get it right.

Wish I would have known this before getting my windshield replaced.. had my windshield replaced by Glass America. The tech has been out to replace the glass twice now, and I'm still hearing that wind noise in the passenger lower corner. Its an improvement from the first time. First time was HORRIBLE. Noticed it immediately at 25-30mph, and at 65... my god you couldnt even hear the radio. This time around its about 50% better, but now at 45-50mph, sure enough there it is again.

Guess i'll be bugging them again about the trim molding... and guess it sounds like going to the Lexus dealer yields the same result... I'll report back with next results..
