Rebuilt the PTO Winch over the past week, mostly it was just a disassemble sand & paint, but I did need to replace all the seals and gasket.

Looked pretty used before, the rollers were rusted and would not move, the clutch was stuck, seals were ****...

That looks great. I really have to say your 40 is looking great.

Looking great. Have you engaged it to make sure everything is working?

Jack

I still need to install the drive shaft, but did run it in the bench. I hook up a drill to drive the gears.

Well, put the PTO drive shaft back in and when I try to engage the winch...nothing. The PTO drive shaft is locking in but the tranny is not turning the PTO. I'm thinking something to do with the linkage from when I pulled the tranny to replace the clutch as the the winch worked then. Just hate the thought of pulling the seats and tranny cover and all that stuff.:bang::bang::bang:

What do you mean by PTO drive shaft is locking in but the tranny is not turning the PTO?

Are you saying that you engage the lever on the left side of the transmission hump with the transmission in gear and the PTO drive shaft does not turn?
Mike

Yeah, if I move the winch control lever either forward or backward the winch/pto drive shaft engages but when I put the transmission into gear and release the clutch the PTO doesn't work and the truck moves forward.

Wouldn't you need to put the t-case in neutral?

Also isn't there an access to the PTO gears from the side of the t-case?

Only put the tranny in neutral to move the winch lever then put the transmission into gear. There is a outer control lever on top-side of the transmission that somehow effects the switching of the transmission to engage the PTO. I'm not sure how the whole thing works yet and have been looking at the manual, but this is new ground for me.

Don't take this as condescending. Because I am physically not there and can't see the situation.

I am assuming that you have not installed a cable yet. After making sure the drum is engaged, put the transfer case in neutral, put the transmission in third gear, push the PTO lever forward. The drum should be rotating. Of course the emergency brake should be engaged and the engine running.

If nothing happens then you have a problem in the transfer case.

Do you have the chassis and body repair manual?

Hope this helps.
Mike

ps: the reason for putting the transmission in third gear is things happen faster.

As a clarification, under normal circumstances. When the PTO lever is engaged, the transmission is engaged and the transfer case is in neutral, only the winch is working. When the transfer case is also engaged, both the vehicle and the winch are working.

This can be a huge advantage to removing yourself from a difficult situation.

Having never seen one in person, I can only vouch for how other PTO setups work.

If the PTO is bolted to the t-case, then the PTO has to get it's power from the input gear of the t-case. That way you can run the winch independently of the wheels. Most PTO's slide a gear from side to side to mesh with the powering gear. It's possible for the forks to break and you can still shift the PTO on, but nothing happens. Sometimes there is a pin that holds the fork to the shaft and that pin breaks because someone slammed it into gear under power and sheared the pin.

There really aren't that many complex things that can go wrong with a pto as it's all gears, shafts, pins and drivelines.

Well...got it working...part dumb ass on my part and part linkage adjustment. Thanks to all, the suggestions did help and got me in the right direction. Also found a leaking heater hose while looking into this problem. Install Silicone hoses
