what would be the minimum thickness of a winch plate/mounting system?
1/4" ?

1/4" seems thin to me but it also depends on the details. I think 3/8" would be better and what I plan to go with. I'm afraid a flat 1/4" plate (i.e. without flanges front and especially the back which is the compression side)) might be susceptible to local buckling under a winch pull. I'm sure it is "strong" enough but it's buckling I'd worry about.

Which is why you run a gussett under the plate.

And that leaves a nice hole under the winch to run the winch line to the axle to suck the front end down..

I used 1/4" plate
