Hey guys,

New to the area, been in Raleigh for a couple months now. Heading to Wilmington with my wife for Labor Day weekend. Any recommendations for trails in the area would be much appreciated.

not much for trails down east that I know of. You do have beach access (20/day) at carolina beach as well as Fort Fisher both within 30 minutes of Wilmington/Wrightsville beaches.

some locals may chime in with a suggestion or two with what used to be available out by the airport

There is a 4x4 park down in that area but the name of it is escaping me.

Thanks all, I will take a look at you suggestions so far...

I've looked at the NC Gazetteer and noticed some "trails" towards the Waccamaw Lake area. I've been camping there back in the day, and did remember some fire roads cut into the longleaf pine forests. I'm thinking some exploration is needed come spring...

Fort Fisher is a good trip. I'd always visited Freeman Park at Carolina Beach until this summer, but will bypass it in the future and head south to Ft. Fisher. Not really a trail, but a good destination -- especially if you want to do some exploration on foot, etc.

Nothing really in the Wilmington area except mud. The place in Brunswick County is called "Carolina Back Woods", North Carolinas Jeep, ATV & 4x4 Off-Road Park and Camping Carolina Backwoods. You have to pay per day and there are a few trails but nothing very good. It is basically just a big mud bog! Lake Waccamaw has some long dirt roads out in the Green Swamp, not much there but long straight dirt roads. The gates will prob. be closed because it is not hunting season. Freeman park is fun to drive out on the beach and Fort Fisher is too. I may see you out at Freeman if you go on Labor day weekend. Let me know if you need any more info. for the Wilmington area. I grew up there and have rode dirt bikes and 4x4's all over the area.

Wilmington sucks for 4x4's, that is why I am thinking about selling the Cruiser!
