My brother in So Cal who wants to buy a 98 for 6800 but has no lockers. It has 170000 miles. It is white, clean but told him that he should wait with one that has lockers. I said that if he decides to sell in the future that it will not be desirable to buyers. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks
Considering that retrofitting both front and rear lockers is both possible and relatively cost effective, I would not let it dissuade me. Such that rear lockers were only available for 2 years out of the 8 year span of the 100 Series, it is not like there are that many US 100's to begin with.
That appears to be an excellent price provided it is mechanically sound. And considering the price, I would not be too concerned about resale value. Especially considering the Yahoo article which awarded the 100 Series the best used car period, unless that truck is a pig, I do not see it depreciating much at all.
it all depends how your brother wants to use the rig in the future (family van?, mall cruiser/ mild adventure rig? or a serious off roader?). A running land cruiser (100 series) is always going to cost around 5k or more so I wouldn't worry about re-sale value. If mechanically sound and no major body damage it's hard to go wrong for $6800.
I concur with Junglejack, it's very easy to add ARB lockers to a landcruiser, and I would be more concerned about getting a clean rustfree socal truck that has not been abused and has had the timing belt, water pump and other maintenance done. The lockers can be wired into the 80 series rotary diff lock knob and the whole thing will look and work like OEM.
I would say the majority of the resale market wouldn't even know what a locker is? Seems like a good price, and would still come out ahead even if you get some ARB's.
