yo!

I've decided based on other threads to get the Thule rain gutter mounts for my 96 FZJ80.

Will the 300 series fit on the 80 series? Are the tall enough to clear the roof?

Do i have to go to the higher lift mounts?

Thanks,

keller

you will most likely need the tall version esp if you are going to mount things on the cross bars that hang below ie. skis and downhill bindings.

also, check that they fit sung, on my FJ62 they were not a great fit and it required some wooded shims to get the fit right.

i plan on using them to support a safari basket of some sort

i have the recommended thule gutter mounts, i guess the tallest ones and they are fine. Which basket are you doing??

The Thule 300 gutter foot will work fine on your 80. I have them on mine and no troubles. When mounting them, be sure to pull the foot to the outer edge of the gutter, and secure firmly. Readjust after driving a ways.

As I'm using the 300 series mounts on my '96, I know for sure they will fit without any issues. The Thule load bars will just come in contact with the factory load bar (resting on top) and can be used as additional support or just slide the factory bar out of the way. I'm using a 4'x8' Conferr RR bolted to 3 Thule load bars. I guess since they advertise that each Thule bar is capable of 165lbs., I can distribute up to 500lbs across the whole thing. I'm using pallet rack wire shelves for my floor board so its quite beefy and lets wind flow through when not loaded. I can walk all over and it feels very secure. I love my setup and have used it quite extensively.

I went to the Thule website and it only recommends the 387 (high mount) for some reason. Personally, I think the high mount would look stupid. Your choice though.

Was looking around and found this pic. Its probably the best pic to highlight the RR.

btw- these were taken in my backyard earlier this year when we were still building our pool and doing some landscaping. The back of the truck was loaded down with cement blocks which made it quite challenging getting across the yard. Yet another reason why IH8MUD but actually, it was quite fun :D

My racks do look high but not retarded high. The 387 gives me enough room to clean my roof etc.. I also can put my fishing poles on the rack with the reel down not up.

I guess its personal preference. Wile E where did you get that there Rack????

Sorry, didn't mean to insult anyone. Guess I should pay more attention to detail :whoops:

It was sometime ago but through a series of unfortunate events for them, I got a really nice RR brand new for $50. I believe it was ~$500 when i ordered it. I put $50 down to order the RR but instead of it going to the store, it got drop shipped to my house. The 4x4 store I ordered it from went outta business and filed for bankrupcy just before I recieved the RR (8 week delivery time) so I had no idea how to pay the balance. I heard Con-Ferr had gone outta business themselves so I guess you can only get them used nowadays.

WET,

your set up is perfect. that is what i want to do. i don't have a basket in mind yet, but i can get the SURCO large basket (5'x6') locally here in reno from summit racing wherehouse for only $187 w/o shipping. So, i am thinking about that.

get the thule 300's + crossbars from ebay, Surco basket, and i should be under $300 for whole system.

300's on ebay are pretty common, so i'll probably do that.

i don't have huge weight requirements. I thinking, bags, hilift, shovel, maybe gas can, stroller, playpen, a little bit of camping gear, maybe a cooler or spare tire once in a while...probably some 2x4's and other wood once in a while.

If you think my setup is perfect now, you should see the RR ladder I picked up from Mot. Its the shiznit! I got my first comment yesterday in a home depot parking lot from a FJ40 owner about the whole look of the lift, 33" MTR's, RR, and ladder. I was holding out on posting pics for my ROTW but thats not until Dec.

looks nice, i was debating about getting the ladder but i have an idea for my other spindle on my Kaymar instead of the jerry carrier.

Its been cropped, not so big or clear, and was taken from afar but here's sneak peak nonetheless...

Guess I've never publicly given Mot all the hard earned credit he deserves for not just shipping me the RR ladder from Japan, but for creating the opportunities for all of us here stateside. THANKS MOT!

I disagree with this line of thinking. NOWHERE does Thule say that a single bar is rated for 165 lbs. That is the max dynamic rating for the rack system on this vehicle. The rating is as much about braking and handling (and the strength of the towers under shearing forces) as it is about the strength of the roof.

IMO, all gutter mount systems are WAY better with three or more sets of towers and crossbars. Distributes the weight and torsional stresses more evenly across all rack towers and roof pillars.

So in keeping with my initial line of thinking, if 165 lbs is the 'rated dynamic' weight limit of 2 bars and 4 posts, then adding a 3rd bar and 2 more posts would increase it to a max dynamic load of 247.5 lbs. I can live with that although I guess it also depends on how the load is distributed, what safety factors were designed into the system, and driving habits/conditions. You make valid points, and I can't say I've ever weighed the loads I've placed upon it but since the weight of the RR and wire pallet shelves alone is on the order of ~80 lbs, I can gaurantee you I've hauled over 200 lbs. of gear at any given time over the years.

As far as my initial claim the system handling up to 500 lbs, yes and no. I agree with you that I would not place a 500 lb dynamic load on it (ie whilst driving  ) but I have had up to 2 grown men up on it while loading it up so its definately capable of handling 400-500 lbs statically.

Static loading versus dynamic laoding are two different things.

But slice it however you like.
