the auto tranny?

well isnt there a few stock bj70 that are automatic? those might be a clue

Having just completed this painful execise the first question is which transmission is behind the 1Hdt? Depending on the transmission there are a number of bellhousings that could make it work. Toyota was pretty standard in which trannys it offered worldwide. They made various engine/ tranny combinations available in various markets. Once we know which tranny you are looking to use folks here can help you out on if and where that combination was offered and where you might be able to source the needed parts. In my instance I just took a tranny that was behind a "B" series engine and put it behind a 1HZ (kissin' cousin to the 1Hdt).

Ill revise my answer. As Volcano Cruiser said it would be good to know whats behind the HD you are asking about.

If its an Auto - A440 or A442 then it will probablly work if you get the bellhousing from a BJ74. You will need the flex plate etc to fit the 14B as well.

If its an H15x 5 speed I dont believe these were ever connected to any form of B engine. Possibly in a late Dyna but I have no idea.

Your other option would be to use an H55 but here again you would need to get a B specific bellhousing and a trans from a B setup.

i need to know waht other engine and tranny will work on my hdj81 land cruiser if my 1 hdt gives trouble ...parts for this engine is not to popular in my country.....

Ok, I think that I understand now. (1) you are driving an hdj81 witha 1HDT engine in it (2) you don't know which tranny you have presently in the truck (3) you are really curious about a possible replcaement engine for the 1HDT because you are concerned about parts availability.

Assuming that I have this right, what country are you in? This GREATLY affects the question of both parts availibility and replacment engines. For example, among your "high end":) Toyota diesels the 14 and 15B are very popular in Southeast Asia and Australia and NZ but only a few can be found in the Americas. The 1HZ and 1HDT are more popular in Canada and South America but hard to come by in other parts of the world. It therefore follows that parts for each will be available where the engine was sold/ promoted. For example when I was looking at engines for my engine swap I really wanted a 15B but I couldn't find here in Central America anywhere. Had I found one, I would have had to order all parts in from Japan. That is how I ended up swapping in the 1HZ.

As to which engine will easily replace a 1HDT, they easy answer is the 1HZ. They are almost identically the same engine and if I recall have the same bolt pattern and use the same bellhousing so they should bolt up to your current tranny , whatever it is. BTW, Open the hood of your truck and look for the factory plate on the firewall. It will tell you what transmission you have in the truck. You may also be able to find a similar plate on the doorpost of the drivers side door, although I can't say for sure on that as mine never came with one.:grinpimp: The real trouble for you is that if you are anticipating parts availibility problems for your current 1HDT you are going to have the same parts sourcing problems for the easiest swap, the 1HZ, as they are almost the same engine and use alot of parts in common. Of course all of this begs the question of why are you worried about the 1HDT? There are very few known problems with the engine and if properly maintained it is said that they should go 500K kms before needing major work.

Assuming that the reason you are asking about the 14b is because it is popular in your region then we will have to know what tranny you have before we can say if that swap, using your current transmission, is possible.

I cant think of another engine which would be better than the 1HD T.
Its probably better to find suitable parts dealers and collect a stockpile of parts from overseas .
Putting a 14B,even with a turbo,would be a backward step IMO.
There will be a lot of work and expense doing a decent engine swap, because nothing else, except the 1HZ, comes close to being a bolt in engine.

i was afraid of that...i was even considering the 1kz..... did any 80s come with that?
then the transfer case wont work because the diff in a prado is centre....

The 80 series only came with 6 cyl diesels.
The 1HZ would be better than the 1KZ,and you are right, centred diff on the Prado.

Is yours running ok now as it is? Location?
Some of the guys in Canada are beginning to get a good range of parts for the 1HD T.

Am in the caribbean...TRINIDAD... yep mine is running ok its on296xxxkm. with a rebuild that was done by the previous owner at around 200xxx....complete rebuild.......

we dont even have the 1hz available here...!!!...

The rebuilt engine should last the life of the truck.
