high pitched squeal or whistle almost sounds like a kettle boiling, but much higher pitch. Its coming from somewhere in the engine compartment and i believe near the carburator. Anyone have any ideas?

bearing in the smog pump???

that would be my guess too or in the ps pump but most likely the smog pump. unless it is definitely by the carb...then???

oh, and it doesn't make that noise all the time, sometimes it will stop with slight pressure on the accelerator and i'm pretty sure it stops after 2000 rpms

Could it be a vacuum leak? High pitch whistle, near carb? That would be my bet. Slight pressure on the throttle drops the vacuum as the valves open.

I have noticed the same thing with my cruiser. I was figuring it being a vaccuum leak. I mostly hear it when the engine is cold. seems to seal off after warm up.

anyone else got this? suggestions?

Thanks James

Hi All...

This is my first post here... but I love the forum already... so much good info!

I just got my first LC last week and I've got the same noise. High-pitched whine... sounds alot like a pulley going bad. Mine doesn't start until the engine is warm though... and it also will fade a bit under accelerator pressure.

If it was the smog pump, is it possible to fix without replacing the pump?

Thanks...
s.

take the belt off the smog pump and run the engine for a couple minutes. if it still makes the noise then start looking elsewhere.

Mat60, great suggestion to half step the troubleshooting.

However, I will give you some good news, I have just replaced every vacuum line and a less than noticeable squeal I had (really negligible in my case) did go away so I will simply reiterate the suggestion that you check those lines. I have temporarily bought @ .79cents/foot 2.8mm or 7/64 line from advance auto until I receive better quality stuff I ordered, but it worked just fine.

Weird Noise

My 60 makes this noise and its driving me crazy. It sounds as though it is coming from the carb. The weather was really cold here lately, and after a hard time starting it, the noise started. Is it possible one of the gaskets in the carb has gone bad and that it is sucking air? The idle is really rough and I am having a heck of a time keeping it from dieing; It taked gas to keep it from dieing at idle. Also, I have gone through the manual, but cannot determine how to check if gaskets need to be replaced without tearing down the carb! HELP!

Ok, I found that the new vac hoses have a larger O.D than oem hoses. On the far back port on the carb (between valvecover and carb) was not seated properly. The port length seems shorter than the rest on the carb. Anyways, since we dont have smog here in AR, I clamped it off and it runs amazingly better! try it out.
