Who is using D-STAR (1 Viewer)

I sat in on a presentation for the D-STAR system and was very impressed.
It seem that this maybe the next step in radio .
They just installed a " repeater " in the county so com was super easy.

Any body else messing with this?

I am just starting to play with it. My local ARES group has purchased some D-Star radios and I am the one that gets to figure it out and then train everyone else. So far if you are in D-Star repeater range there are lots of things you can do... we are using the D-RATS software and everything seems to be working. I have only had time to play around with it for about an hour so far but am hoping to have some time this weekend to play with it a bit more.

I'm planning on installing an Icom radio eventually, and you can upgrade it with D-Star technology. In other words you can do it in two steps- buy your Ham radio (which is dual bands, and 50W both bands), and then add on D-Star later. I posted about it on here... Icom 2820 I think was the model.

Ok, I've had the radio for just about a week now. It took me until Thursday night before I was able to get the D-Star setup and working. You have to register the radio and your call sign with the local repeater(took about 24 hours), then figure out how to program the Callsigns into the radio(Much easier if you follow instructions off the internet and not Icom), then program the D-star repeater freq. into the radio. At this point you can use the Voice side of D-Star. Now there is still more steps required to connect you PC up and use the data side. Once you have registered you will have to log back into the system and update your information. Primarly adding your callsign next to an IP address. This is as far as I got since the battery died on me well I was being walked throw the setup with the repeater sponcer. I will update you further once I have recharged everything and have a chance to play again.
