whirring noise after engine shut off (1 Viewer)

hey all i have the strange thing that happens when ever i drive the LC for any amount of time. When i am parking at my appartment i shut it off and i hear a noise like a gear slowing down. it is strange and wish to find its source but it does not last long enough for me to get under the hood to find it. i know that it is not the fan clutch and not the carb cooling fan. i am also in neutral when i shut of the engine. also the brake pedal is pressed but i don't remember if i hold the clutch pedal also. thats all i have....any ideas? OH!! New gas tank tomorrow!! gotta love recalls.

Prolly the AC damper wheel spinning down. It's a little roller that just touches the bottom of the AC belt to keep it from bouncing too much when the AC clutch engages.

Hey FJ40Jim the AC pump and belt are gone. I do know what you are talking about. The AC damper is still there it's just not touching anything. It almost sounds 'Transmissiony'. The best way to describe it is like when you are putting it into reverse and you get that slight gear contact noise (something about no synchro or something) just before it goes into reverse? RRRRRRRRrrrrrrrr...... then comes to a stop. that what it sound like just after i shut off the engine.

In that case it is the clutch ThrowOut bearing spinning down.

To make a clutch TO noise, with engine idling, put trans in neutral and set p-brake. Push clutch pedal down (TO bearing spins up), then release pedal and immediately shut off key. Spinning should be heard.

To not make TO noise, repeat as above, but do not release pedal before engine shutdown. No noise should be heard once crankshaft stops turning.

Hey FJ40Jim did your test and it does seem to be the TO bearing. soooo is that good bad normal?

A brand new bearing is full of heavy grease, so it won't spin much after it's released. Also, a greased bearing is very quiet.

so the bearing in question is getting old, but hasn't failed yet.

My 60 was doing the same thing. I had new clutch kit installed plus slave cylinder, master cylinder. I'm still hearing the noise

Try turning off the engine with the clutch pedal pushed in. I made it a habit of always doing that cuz I didn't like hearing gears banging in the transmission after the 2F breathed it's last breath and shook

It was the AC idler pulley
