The old goat just started a whining sound last night. The truck seems to be shifting fine. The truck makes the noise while driving and in the drive way in park or neutral. The sound is seems like it is coming from the cats or the trans. Any suggestions ?

whining

Assuming its not your significant other, does the whine get louder when you rev the engine in neutral or only in gear? if it gets louder in park or neutral, I'd say its the power steering pump. Easy check is to remove the belt driving that and start er up.

Yeah, It does get louder when reved, but it sound like it is the trans or the drivers side cat. Power steering seems fine when driving. I got under the truck when it was running and just could not determine which one. Could it still be the ps.

If you think its the pump but cant be sure. try to locate the noise by taking a long screw driver and putting the blade on the pump and hold the handle to your ear. If you hear the noise you are looking for, then you found the problem. If not keep trying other sections of the motor.

Fluid change

I checked the fluid and it is full. I had the fluid changed last year. I did add about two cups about three weeks ago. It was castrol dextron two. could this be it. I do not drive the 62, but three times a week. About 6 weeks ago, my daughter asked what does this button do as she was pushing it in while we were moving. It made a real bad sound could this be what started this?

how many miles? I had to change the trans at about 235K miles. I don't think the switch had too much to do with it, arent (aint) you supposed to be able to engage the 4high while running down the road?
try www.cruiserparts.net thats where I got my used trans from 108K miles on it when I got er, put about 5k on it since, no problem. they were great to deal with.
good luck.

The first thing I would do is drain the fluid and drop the pan. Take the pickup screen out and clean it. I had problems with my not wanting to move when the fluid was cold. Cleaned the screen and works fine. Might not be your problem that's where I'd start. Good luck.

it was the 4wd button.

You're supposed to be able to push this button at any speed.
