Good day,

A small problem I need some help with locating. Whenever I run my car there is a whining noise, like a turbo. It seems to increase when I accelerate and it goes down a bit when I'm at a constant speed.
When the clutch is pressed the noise remains. When the gear is in neutral the noise is gone.

Any pointers I can take back to the workshop?

Thanks!

What happens if you put the t/case in neutral and rev the engine?

How many klms has the engine/gearbox done?

It's about the same. Noise starts at about 2500rpm and gets higher in pitch as the revs increase.
So far I have heard two explanations:
- my mechanic: pump of power steering
- my bedouin friends in the desert (they are born in Landcruisers): the fan belt I use is not flat but has a pattern
Both do not make sense to me.

Bought the car earlier this year. 2009 model and less than 40k km.

If it was the power steering it would whine louder when you turn the wheel.
I use V belt internal cog fan belts, probably the same as you, and they are quiet.
The fan belt would make the noise all the time, including when you put it in neutral.
So you are correct,it does not make sense.

You might want to post the same question in the 80 series forum, there are lots FZJ80 owners there.

Not many of us have FZJ7* series here, mainly diesels
