I want to purchase a good quality CB radio abd an antenna cobo that I can use for trail comms and on the road, So what does the MUD community think.

Thanks

I think much of the mud community would say get a Ham license and 2m radio/antenna.

But that doesn't work for all of us as many local clubs still use CB predominantly.

So if you must go with CB, I think most would say don't waste a lot of money on the CB, but do buy a quality antenna. Check the FAQ or Slee's site for a common install in the ashtray location. The all-in-one Cobra 75wstx is also popular. As for antennas, taller is better (all other things being equal). But a good install is even more important. Firestick and Wilson are popular, as are mag-mounts that get knocked off on the trail. In the end, if it is only for trail use, damn near anything will work as you'll never be more than a mile from the other vehicles.

If you want greater range for use say, at Moab when you might be a lot more than a mile away from your group or for long-range highway traveling, then back to the Ham license and 2m radio/antenna. License will cost you some time and about $14 for the test. You can get a radio for about $150 and an antenna for about another $70.

Good Luck!

Firestik Antenna! Definitely. They're the best on the market, I'd say and they're easy to tune. And they have a whole support page with billions of FAQs and mythbusters..

Just get a Cobra Radio (I got a midland, and regret it...) and get a 3 or 4ft Firestik II Antenna with spring. Get a mount for it and mount it somewhere on the cruiser and forget about it. Don't scrimp on doing it though. CB's are very finicky.

Wallcott CB, my favorite place to order CB stuff:

102 inch stainless steel whip... anything else... no matter the claims... is merely trying to equal the performance of this antenna... and usually failing.

the cobra 29 ha always been a great cb... th uniden 68 is a clone of it

you should have a reliable 5 miles with this setup... and 10 will not be uncommon... more is possible under ideal conditions... but that means little.

2m rocks. but if thre is no on on the other end then it is pointless...

Al of the ACT had 2m for this last Cruiser Trek... so far suprior thwre is no point in comparing to Cb.
but our visitors did not ... Only CB... so we all (the ACT) had CB and 2m setups in th rigs
less than ideal... but we all had commo all the time that way.

Mark...
