I have alwys loved Colorado wheeling this time of year but I need new blood. I did my 1st Black Bear run 24 years ago and most of the popular trails in and around the Ouray - Silverton area a number of times. Im in search for the less traveled trails that offer the same great scenry with a varity of difficultly. Im good with remote areas not offering services to avoid the masses.

Suggestions?

There are some trails around the Crested Butte/ Central Colorado area, but I don't think they would fit your criteria of low volume of tourist traffic. We always like going up and over Taylor Pass towards Aspen. There is a ghost town called Ashcroft that I find interesting. You might look at some of those books by Charles A. Wells, and Tony Huegel. Their books have extensive listings of trails with directions, mileage, and some local history. They might give you some ideas for something different.

I second the crested butte area... Ourays not too busy if you stay off the popular trails. I did black bear Monday and didn't see a soul the entire trail... well until I got to bridal veil. The alpine loop is ridiculously busy this time of year. Taylor pass, pearl pass and schofield pass are awesome trails. If you've never done them I highly recommend it!

Almost any trail that meets your criteria will be busy on weekends so go mid-week and they will be less crowded. But head for the Flattops north of Glenwood Springs which are practically empty compared to Ouray, Silverton and CB.
