I'll be getting my pup in the next TWO WEEKS!!!
So given my other passion in life (4 wheeling) I need to get this lil guy and my rigs (06' tacoma and 76 fj40 wheeler) ready to incorporate the pup into.
Wondering a few things about what you guys do.

A in the tacoma, is there a dog mat that you guys would recommend or use to keep your dogs comfy and offer them traction?

Do any of you use a chest harness? We won't be using a kennel in the car, bit wanna keep him secure.

Anyone wheeling w their dogs in a 40???
How do you situate your dog in the rig w gear and such?? How do you get them in and out of the rig?? I DO NOT HAVE REAR SEATS in mu 40, but I have a cargo bin in the back that will be carpeted.

This is a VERY IMPORTANT aspect for us and our boy that I am totally un familiar with, so any tips, techniques and provisions you guys can offer will be greatly appreciated!!

I do use a harness when traveling. It hooks up to the seatbelt.
I bought it off a distributor online rather than the big box pet store.
I'll see if I can locate the site as its been a while. We are happy with the harnesses. Thank goodness they haven't been put to the test.

As far as wheeling, I've yet to take my dogs. One would be too skittish, but the other would be fine.
I have a conferr seat in the back of my 40, but I can't get the dog that would go wheeling to sit on it.
She'll only sit on the floor. I have the lap belts bolted in back there, so I probably would just use the harness on her to wheel. This might force her to sit on the seat, but you can vary the harness belt length, so she could sit on the floor. None of this helps you since you don't have the seat in the back though! I also have a rubber mat (cool cruisers IIRC) that helps with the heat from the exhaust running back there.

Here is the place where I ordered ours. You have to order the harness and then the tie ins separate.

USA K9 Outfitters - Auto, SUV, and Truck Safety Gear

The guy is kind of a flaky hippie that takes a while on orders, but he eventually follows through.

As far as getting in and out. I just get mine to jump in via the door and crawl to the back.

Cool stuff. Thanks man.
I was checking out the harnesses at petco today.
I'm thinking a bull mastiff might have issues jumping in and out of my SOA 40. :0
I might have to devise a step or ramp...
Keep em coming, please.

LOL...uh yeah, forgot about the type of dog. Mine both are weigh about 50lbs so they can jump up in a 40 with 33s and a 4" lift with ease...for now at least.

There are ramps and steps for sale on Foster and Smith, but it would probably be cheaper to build something yourself. You could rip off their design ideas of course! :p

I try to avoid the big box pet stores for that type of stuff.
Its usually overpriced. If you have a feed store in your area, then you can get the same stuff for much cheaper.

You've got to drive defensively always. I've got 4 Jack Russells, and 4 Rhodesian Ridgebacks. I always drive as I have to stop and I don't want them through the front window. Some are better at cornering adjustment than others. Puppies I like to keep on my lap, hold them down. Keep windows up until you know they don't want to jump out. All my dogs know "Get in the Back!", that's where they ride. Get a carpet or rubber flooring that allows good traction for them to keep their feet under them. Get rid of any sharp edges.
I just re-read what you said, Bull Mastiff? Gonna be kind of big for a 40 soon? Always carry a jug of water and a bowl.

LOL...Yes! will be a big dog for a 40!!!
That is why I am asking questions like these. Itll take some work, but...gotta bring the boy!!

My dogs seem to look out the window. Once we hit the freeway, they go to the back of the vehicle and sleep.

One would throw up after the first 28 minutes into the ride. You could actually set the odometer and pull over at mile 27.5 and let him out to hurl.

I do not generally take my dogs wheeling with me. Drives on the fire roads, yes. Calico - Moab type wheeling, yes. Rubicon type wheeling, no.

Do a search for twisted stomachs in dogs.

LOL! That's funny, a timed puker! I've been fortunate, no car sick dogs lately.
Mine will sleep on asphalt, but the second we hit gravel, no way! They know they're going for a walk then.

I'll do that dan.
I'm thinking rubicon may be a bit much, but the easier trails... Deer valley, death valley etc would be okay. Additionally, rubicon.... I'm carrying a lot of gear for the "just in case" events that pop up and I'd be worried about space.

I got a harness just as a little support for him.
When the wife isn't with me, I'm gonna make a flat spot where the passenger seat is and just take the seat out for him!!
This all may be mute if he gets car sick though!!!

One of mine used to get car sick when he was a pup. It took a while for him to get over it. We make sure we don't feed him before any trips now. He kind of zones out on longer trips now, which must be his way of dealing with the movement and anxiety. Beats him puking or doping him up. He is so weird about bumps while driving, there is no way he could ever go wheeling. :(

Soooooper stoked!
It's only been a little over TWO MONTHS since we had to put gunner down, and I tell ya... Feels like it's been years!!
In any case... I'm just excited to have the presence of a dog again!!

If he'll wheel with me... That'll be just that much better!

Wrigley's home!!!
Man... There's a LOT in had forgotten about puppies!!!!!

To update how he did in the truck...
He did AWESOME!!! NO FEAR, and he fell asleep for about an hour. No sickness, no accidents...I'm very hopeful for his wheeling future!!
