I Just purchased a rust bucket fj62 ($850) as my 4runner blew the motor while on a road trip, I saved the sr5 aluminium rims and good tires, but when I put them on the fj62 the rims rub. I only need about 1/4 to 3/8" to clear the tie rod. Will it be dangerous to put two washers on each stud behind the wheel so it will clear the tie rod? I am currently laid off and completely broke, credit card maxed and cant afford books for college. I know this is not the right solution but as a temporary fix for a couple of weeks will it work?

The washers sound pretty sketchy to me. Maybe if you are the only one on the road, but it would likely result in uneven stress on the wheel studs, which could break one, or two, and then off goes the wheel...

There are 1/4" wheel spacers. The studs are long enough to run these.

What's wrong with the stock rims/tires?

I would not use washers. You can get inexpensive 1/4" spacers at NAPA, or better yet, put the tires on the stock rims. Drive on the old tires until you can afford a safe solution.

do not use washers, they make 1/4 spacers. Pick them up they are cheap. Hope your rims are not stock as they should need more than that to space them out from what I remember.

Post up a pics of your $850 bargain!!!

thanks for the advice sans snide comments. I'll head over to napa and see what I can do, as I agree that washers are not the way to go, but desperate measures for desperate times.... I'll post pics tonight. The truck has 150k, runs/drives SWEET, never been offroad or wrecked but has MUCHO rust on the quarter panels and lower doors.

sounds like you got a sweet deal! Most all of the 60 series' have rust unless you wanna spend a mint. Just keep your eyes peeled for some rust free dorrs and panels. They will come by eventually.
