Pretty common older semi-flexible coupler design. Grease to keep all of the bits from fretting and wearing out prematurely.
 
Not really, two sprockets and a very short piece of double row chain with a master link in it. Strong and has a lot of tolerance for axial and radial misalignment in it. They originally were run open and were lubed with the kind of grease used on industrial wire rope. They can be noisy!
