I recently replaced a broken sump pump in my basement (put in Simer submersible 1/3 HP, 1 1/4 in.) . The new one pumps the water out ok, but at the end of its "cycle" it shudders pretty badly for about 10-15 seconds making a loud racketing sound that can be heard even on the second floor. The old one never did that. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Should I just try buying another one? Any recommendations on the brand/model?

Thanks,
Igor

Sounds like it's sucking air. Can you adjust the float switch so it doesn't draw down so far?

Does it shutters after it turns off or before? If it's before it shuts off than it's what KLF said , if after then it's water draining back through the check valve making it "thump thump thump". If thats the case get a better check valve.

Thank you KB1OSF.
It sounds like a good idea, but I am not sure whether that could be done since the floater is the "flapper" type, not one that slides up and own a metal shaft.

Toyo FJ40, I finally found out: it shudders after the pump shuts off. So, as you suggested, it must be a check valve - I actually have two of them, one about 2' above the pump, and the other 3' higher above the first one. Do you have any idea which one is a more likely culprit?

itbrokeagain, I also thought two were not needed, but I've always had both and when asked a guy at a hardware store, he suggested I kept them that way. I'll now try to get rid of one.

The only time two would be needed is if you have 2 pumps or if you had a backup sump pump. Each discharge pipe would get its own check valve before they join together. Its possible getting rid of the second check valve will fix the issue also.
