What's the deal with chrome trim around the wheel wells?

Looks like all of 2% of cruisers have it. Was that a dealer addition maybe? I took the trim off my truck in preparation for painting and I'm wondering about putting it back. It serves no purpose, looks kinda nice though.

From what I've read, they just hold dirt and promote rust.

My neighbor has a perfect condition 62 with that trim. I just don't like it; the truck would look 10 times better without it.

after 22 years, the ONLY rust i have ( had) started around that ******* trim.
