My dad’s wife has owned this 2006 GX470 for several years. Has had basic maintenance done and they just did the TB, radiator, and water pump. About 100k miles. Interior is dirty but no rips or tears. Exterior is not great. No body rust but doesn’t look like it’s been washed or waxed in years. Headlights cloudy. Dent in rear plastic bumper. Finish coming off of all the wheels. Basically they did the bare necessities to keep it running and nothing extra.
I was considering buying it for cheap (maybe $4000) before they tried to clean it up and sell it. Brought it home for a test drive and noticed the paint peeling on the roof. They had no idea. I’m aware of the repairs that Lexus is offering to make but doesn’t cover this year.
My wife’s current DD is an 05 100 series with about 180k miles. This would become her new DD and we would keep the 100. What do you all think? Is all of the paint going to peel? Will Lexus ever step up and make it right? Any advice on a fair price for both me and my father?

Maybe take it to a shop and get a price to paint the roof. Decide if it’s worth it to you. My hood was going to cost me around $2k. It seems like other people have had more peeling in other areas but mine is confined to the hood and maybe it’s starting on the front fenders a little bit. If you can get it for $4000 and the peeling paint doesn’t bother you much AND they at least did some oil changes, I’d probably grab it for that cheap. Sounds like a potential steal! Get a community college kid learning to paint cars to paint it for you cheap at the school!

Dude...100k miles, TB/WP service just done, and only $4k??? RUN, do not walk to your bank and get the cash ASAP!!!

I hit a deer and had to buy a brand new hood and my body shop painted it for $300. For only $4k all-in, heck, I'd consider having the whole truck repainted or have it vinyl wrapped. Even if you ended up with $8k invested, that's 2/3-1/2 what a truck like that should go for.

Thanks for the responses. I would have no problem with a less than perfect repair on the roof but I just don’t want the rest of the paint to start peeling.
Undercarriage is ok. Definitely some rust but not terrible. We use salt on the roads in this area but usually only happens a few times a year.
The $4000 price has not been agreed to. I’m thinking that ballpark. Im sure he’ll give me the friends and family discount but also he won’t want to get screwed. What do you think this would sell for in a regular arms length deal? Without repairing any of the existing damage.

Dont worry if done correct it wont peel off. To me its just details because most of stuff i do or fix my self. If they were doing basic work it means brakes shocks etc are ok. Of course its old car and anything can happen but its toyota and top of that it has only 100k ! How interior looks if its good as exterior i would be ready to put 8k at least. Rest can be izi fixed by You if You dont feel comfty just text bodyshop with pics.

Btw i never experienced that but selling something to family member at market price or with little discount somehow is not right with my rules. He should be happy to not having that headache with selling and meet that all people who expect new car for few grands.
On other hand u have oportunity to get car with known history. Its priceless.

Im new here but rules are pretty same to all cars no matter brand. Maybe more experienced gx owners will tell more
...

Wheels You can paint your self. materials wont be more than 100$ plus your elbow grease and 2 saturdays. Check my thread i wrote there everything. Better option is ppwder coating but process involve tires removal which generate $$$$ plus powder coating it self that i dont know but for sure few hundreds driving droping off then picking up installing tires. Too much for me. Tooo perfect ;)

From my limited research over the past couple weeks (dealing with blizzard pearl issues myself) there’s no telling if other areas will be a problem. That being said, the roof is probably the best spot for it to happen because it’s not visible like the rest of the body. If you really wanted to, you could peel the roof and rattle can it yourself.

as z00t3ch said, at $4k, you could easily drop $4k-$6k in overhauling that rig and still come in at about market value for a GX in good shape with that mileage.

Assuming it’s mechanically in good shape and has no rust, that’s a great deal, even with the blizzard pearl issues.

I'd pay $4k for that truck all day despite the issues. Hopefully you can get it for that much or close to it.

Buy it from family and there is no sales tax so that little gets your wheels painted.

You could do all the grunt work and strip, sand and prep the car for paint then take it in and get it sprayed. Most good body shops will do that. Offer cash for more discount.
