What would you do? 3B or 13BT

Which engine should go with in my 1981 BJ42?

3B and turbo can be fitted to your specifications to get lots of snort. 3B are readily available and turbo from a 4cyl gasser works well. I have volvo turbos on both of mine. You just need a manifold and likely an adapter and you can do it yourself for less $.
13BT is great but a bit harder to find and likely more dough. 3B and turbo is about the same and cheaper.
Could I use an OM 617 Mercedes turbo? Could you share your install?

An old thread. Asked again, I would say get a 14B or 15B with a turbo if possible. These engine have more cc and reinforced blocks

Hi,
Need help. Just opened up my B1 diesel engine and the mechanic is suggesting I swap the engine with something a little more powerful. He suggests I go for the 13BT. The issue is, my vehicle is the 12V spec and I have just recently purchased kit worth over £1,500 which is based on the 12V spec. Will I need to swap the wiring and change the power from 12V to 24V for this 13BT engine? I live in the UK, will the cold weather be a problem starting the vehicle on 12V?
Many thanks

I think it will be easier and cheaper to make the 13BT into a 12 volt. You just need to change the starter, alternator (maybe you can use your old ones) and the glow screen. There is also the vacuum shut down gadget, Im not too sure what you have to do about that.
Lots of 12volt diesels in the uk and with the 13BT being direct injected , it will be easy.

I don't know how a 13BT would be cheaper, considering you already have the B engine and lots of money into a rebuild kit.

I had a 12V BJ70 for two or three winter seasons, can't remember now, here in coastal Alaska and had no problems with it starting the beast.

I said the 13BT would be cheaper and easier to modify into a 12V rather than modifying the whole vehicle to 24V. Although I guess you could have a hybrid 12/24 like an 81 series

My apologies, I meant I have already spent £1,500 buy parts such as lights and switches which are 12V compatible.
Good to hear that your rig worked well in Alaska and if it can work there, it can easily work here too.

I fitted up my 3B with a TD05 from a Volvo. I also have another DIY turbo 3B fitted with a Garett turbo from a Volvo as well.
The latter was built by a member of this forum. They both work well and are significantly cheaper than sourcing a 13BT. Volvo must have used a couple different turbo makers when they fitted the 740 turbo versions of thier cars in the 80's and perhaps early 90's. Both set-ups make around 140-150hp if I had to guess. When you go that route you'll need an EGT gauge to tune your A/F mixture.

Just installed a 13B-T in my 1984, BJ40. The engine is mated with a H55f gearbox.
