I am getting my HJ60 ready for a trip to Central America in about six months. I has done this trip in a gasser from the US a couple of times (FJ62). My 24V 1987 HJ60 is in moderate shape with 480,000km, has a lift, rooftop tent, etc.

I am wondering what diesel engine/mechanical parts I should bring. So far I am thinking:

clutch slave rebuild
master cylinder rebuild
belts, hoses, fuses
all fluids
a brake line, headlight, and 24V turn bulbs
alternator brushes
water pump

do I need a feed pump or EDIC spare? what other doodads do a need to keep the diesel running???

Thanks,
Winslow

Thanks. That's right, I will need a couple of those and some oil filter to boot!

Does the HJ 60 have a fuel/water seperator or a screw on fuel filter with a drain?

Yep, fuel/water seperator and a little light on the dash.

Mexico, as far as I know, is a hard place to find Toyota parts, but then Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua & Costa Rica, you pretty much find everything relating to engine/mechanical parts...

Where/how far south are you heading? PM me and let me know if you come down by Tegucigalpa, Honduras, maybe we can chat some LC.

regards

Does anyone carry a feedpump, or perhaps the gasket that goes inside it. Will the truck run if the EDIC is shot?

add diaphragm to the list, hand primer, ensure the hoses are new, keep old ones for spares. Where you are going glows will not need to be spares.
maybe a couple 24 volt generic relays too.
butt splices
wiring diagram and fsm
a few fuel filters
can't think of any more things.....

Thanks,

alternator regulator
rubber hoses for the colling système
some metric tool
...

Starter contacts

Winslow,

As one who makes this trip regularly, most recently 2 weeks ago with my '82 BJ60 (500,000kM) from B.C. Canada to Guatemala City.
My spares list includes essential hoses for the cooling system (if you can't pinch it off or plug it to keep going then you need it), fan belt, spare injectors and glow plugs, fuel filters and fuel conditioner, brake pads (if you haven't done them recently), water pump, altenator and starter (mine was giving me trouble before we left), altenator regulator, tranny/transfer crossover hose.
I keep the hoses and belts new to replace the old ones if required (I've only had a hose blow once in nearly 20 years and 400,000kM's on the BJ60).

As my friend BJ40man says, Mexico will be the problem if you have mechanical issues. After that it's easy to find parts.

Oh, "moderate shape" is NOT good enough. Mechanically you need it to be as near to perfect as you can get. Remember you DON'T want problems do you?

Drop me a PM when you're in Guatemala!

Here is JUST a thought of what NOT to bring: you wrote of "carrying all fluids" - now, consider the weight and volume that would entail, and the circumstances you could find yourself wherein you might need them yet not be able to make do with what's local.

Just a thought!

I would however have a jug of water on my roof(drinkable and used for coolant). And I would have 3 litres of engine oil.

Doubt I would carry brake fluid or such.

I would eliminate all the rebuild kits by rebuilding before you go if you think anythings suspect.
A lot of things that break wont stop you from moving.

I just came back from a 2000klm each way trip through the desert to Ayers Rock(you can get spares but its a 2-3 day wait).
I spent a few weeks checking and getting everything perfect. Took a small amount of fluids for top ups and a hose and belt kit.
Took particular attention to the tools I took

Next time I go on a trip I might take something for plugging a fuel tank and radiator

Things are different out here in North America. Mexico has strict import rules and the customs doesn't move fast to bring things in. That makes it harder for Land Cruiser owners as Mexico NEVER imported LandCruisers for the general public and still have very few private diesel powered vehicles. The US never had diesel LandCruisers and LandCruisers just are not as plentiful as in other parts of the world.

As for fluids, I wouldn't bother bringing in any fluids unless you use synthetic lubricants which can be tough to find in Mexico and Central America. Every gas station has engine oil and the like and unless your trip is short you're going to need an oil change along the way and you'll be using whatever they have or carrying it. There are also plenty of "refractionarias" around to buy lubricants too.

Potable water is a good idea (it's available most everywhere too) but as for using it in the truck, you can get non-potable water at every gas station and other places too.

Since I haven't seen them mentioned...
I also carry gasket sealant, a variety of hose plugs, and duct tape.
Critical equipment failure rarely occurs on my trips. It's little things, like oil leaking from the vacuum pump or a wire grounding out, that plague me.
Have a good time.
Happy Trails! N

Hey Winslow,
John from Proffitts Cruisers here. When ya leaving? My wife and I will be heading down South between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Christmas in Oaxaca is very cool. I highly recommend it. We plan on staying in Oaxaca until after the New Years and then south to Xela, Guatemala where we will stay for a month or so. We might head further south if we feel like it.
Let me know if you want some company.
John

Hey John,

We're trying to nail down some dates. I'll PM you when I know more. Be nice to rally before the snow flies. Picking up my Brown FJ60 on Friday, super pumped!

I drove a stock FJ62 from Alaska to Panama a couple of years ago and while I brough have a cruiser with me in parts, all I really needed was something I didn't have- a brake line. My caliper stripped and fell off taking out the brakes with it. I also had some kind of problem with the load proportioning valve. I like the idea of doing the work now. I think I'm going to get after the feedpump and alternator before I leave.
