If I am going to ride with yall at places like Gulches(sp) and Tellico will a 2.5" OME with 33" tires be sufficient or do I need to go with a 4" with 33's? I am putting in an Aussie locker too.
Oh! I have a FJ40.

I hope I was some help tonight. My pm box is clear now if you need anything.

You don't want my opinion on this. I say go spring-over with 38's and enjoy everyone looking up to you.:grinpimp:

J/K, I think I would go ahead with the 4". I have seen a lot of guys on here go small and then try to upgrade later. 4" lift with 33's will eliminate virtually all rubbing.

Just wanted to add, that movie I was watching was Tropic Thunder. Funny as hell!

Belmont,
You were great with the help that you offered. I really appreciate you going out of your way to help a newb. Yea I like the looks of the 4" but like what I hear about the comfort of the 2.5" OME. I don't know.
Bro, Tropic Thunder sucked! Downey made that movie.

save yourself the trouble of re doing it later. Go ahead and put the 4" lift on. Might be more than you need for now but if you decide to go bigger later it will save you alot of time and cash. 4" for now then extended shacles and 35's later. If you can swing the cash it would be great to do a set of 33 at's for daily driving and a set of more arressive tires for the trails. Mooker was talking about going bigger, you might be able to get a good deal on his 34" interco's. Just a thought. You can get the rock crusher wheels for about $50 ea and they really take the abuse plus you can keep your street wheels purdy. you could also check e bay,CL, and mud. Lots of guys sell their factory toyoa wheels cheap when the do custom wheels.

Well if I go with the roll cage then I am getting away from the original look, which is what I am wanting to keep.

Go 4". You will want it later. Eventually you will want to go bigger than 33.

Yep....Thinking about getting rid of the 34's with rims and hubcaps.

I would recommend the 4" lift with 35's if you want to run Tellico.

If you run Tellico, your truck will not keep that original look for long. If you run Tellico without a roll cage, your noggin may not keep it's original look....:D

Seriously, there are all different levels of trails out there. It all depends on what you care to run and how easy/hard of obstacles you are willing to tackle. The less you build your truck, the more you will break and fewer trails will be accessible to you. Build it the way you want to use it.

Your rig would look sweet with Mooker's TSL's and stock rims. Not sure if that is the dirrection you were wanting to go. Don't worry about the rough ride on swampers, 40's ride rough regardless of the tires. So they might as well look badass.

Maybe Turkey and Gundy can back me up on my little disclaimer: I'm going to assume that most 40's aren't driven much regardless of their lift or mechanical condition. We've got lots of garage queens out there (and rightly so).

That being said:

Do you want a good, sturdy daily driver that allows you to have fun on lots of trails and get dirty once in a while (2.5")? Or, do you want a good trail rig that doesn't need to be trailered to an event but otherwise isn't driven more than 2 or 3 times a month (4")? I haven't heard the third option (BIG!!!) mentioned at all.

I'd go with the first option and learn to steer clear of the crazy stuff. But, if you have even the faintest thought of going bigger, better to go ahead with it now.

Hey BBQ Give me a little more info on what your thoughts are

Is this a DD?

Have you ever driven offroad before?

Do you want body damage?

Do you want to site see or trail ride?

Do you have a budget?

And as far as driving it as a DD a 4" or 2.5" lift doesn't matter...the only thing that matters on a DD is the tire size, I'll comment some more on this topic once I see your answers.

Jeremy

I did mention it. It's the only way i'd roll. ;) But a SUA lift will probably suit him best.

Just make sure you go with a skinny tire, or else start saving up for power steering now. Everyone is different, but for me I did the power steering before I even installed the gas tank. All it took was one drive around the yard with a fuel can bungeed on with 33's to tell me my first mod had to be PS. Obviously it snowballed from there and has yet to leave the garage.

Is this a DD? Mostly yes. More or less joy riding

Have you ever driven offroad before? Not to the extent yall have been. Mainly mud but I am done with mud for the most part. There is some when I go hunting.

Do you want body damage? Heck no

Do you want to site see or trail ride? Both without damage as a result

Do you have a budget? $1500-$1900 installed

I went from stock to 4", both with 33's. Never considered 2-1/2". Ride is fine... it's a 40. Actually like the ride better with the lift and I also think they look better with the 4" lift.

Here's stock...

And same setup with the lift...

I bought my FJC with the intentions of having a good SUV with some off-road capabilities. Now it sits in the yard on 34" swampers with a 3" lift full of camping and trail gear 90% of the time. And I'm loving it chief.
This trail stuff is very addictive. Your rig won't drive any worse with lift and trail tires, but it will trail a lot worse with small lift and compromise tires.
YMMV.

Sounds good....you are gonna make out fine with either route you go....As a DD the 4 or 2.5 will do, they both ride great and the only thing that's gonna change the ride is the type of tire you choose. Also with not wanting body damage or very little I should say you're not gonna go anywhere in a 4" lift that a 2.5" lift wouldn't go. To give you some examples/ideas....JP has a 2.5" lift with 33" skinny's non locked...it's a great smooth ride, he goes where he wants, he's not limited with the 2.5" the tires are tucked inside the fenders so you don't crush your fenders. The only thing you would want are a set of sliders to keep your body off of banks. Now with a 4" lift..I'm gonna use Marshall....granted his is spring over but the point is the same. He runs 35's ...very nice ride....a little tipsy on corners in the mountains, but not enough to scare ya....his tire stick out past the fenders....this helps when you land on banks, keeps your body off the bank wall....also nice to have sliders so you keep yourself off of rocks...And then to give you an extreme is Capt. Jim and Alan...monster rigs 40" tires full roll cage designed to the T....we went up some hellasiously fun trails at Tellico but the rigs got the hell beat out of them, body damage, bent tubing, broken doors....so no matter what you do your vehicle is not impervious to damage. And a lot of people say go with the 4" cause you'll wanna upgrade later, well if you do the 2.5" all you have to do to upgrade later is add a leaf and it'll give btwn 3.5" and 4" by the time you're done. Cruisers are a constant work of art, just ask JP....he's thinking of the next thing he is going to do even before he's finished with what he's doin to it now. So hope this helps some, JP (Clemsoncruiser) can give you some advice he's had both 2.5 and 4" lifts. Have fun and good luck:beer:

Get a roll bar. Doesn't take away from the stock look (IMO) but more than once a rollbar has saved drivers/passengers bacon. Kinda like motorcycle leathers, you don't wear them because you are planning to crash, you wear them just in case you crash. 40's are not Celica's and even driving around town can end up on their sides or tops.

That aside I vote 4". For a daily driver they work fine. You can get them into all but the shortest garages (esp on 33's) It opens up more tire choices for you to run. they look pretty good with 33's to 35's. If you do get froggy a little trimming and 35's pose no real trouble (maybe extend bumpstops). As far as power steering I'm sorry I waited so long to do it, but I was good before that up to 35's and lockers. (no rocks though).

I am jaded a bit though, when I was stationed in Chas a few years (quite a few) back I got stuck in a little mud hole where the paintball stuff is now north of the base. Stock on 31X10.5 and it took 2 jeeps to get my ass out. A couple inches of lift and bigger tires wouldn't have kept me from getting stuck, but I would have felt a bit more dignified by being really stuck.
