what necessary tools and spare parts would you bring??

if you were traveling in a mountainous/desert area in a solid axle diesel hilux, and space was limited, what would you absolutely have in your tool box? how many sockets? which spare parts? anyone ever forget something and wish they had it? or really regret carrying something they didn't need? just looking for some tips and suggestions...thanks!

You need tools that follow Toyota's pattern, 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 24, 27, 30, 32, 36mm I'd bring hoses and belts for sure. It depends on how far away from civilization you'll be and where in the world you plan to go.

In the Mojave in California or Nevada you're probably worse off than in places in South America only because a diesel HiLux is a rare animal stateside!!

With good preparation its highly unlikely you will need too many spares.
I dont take much on remote area trips,just an air filter,fuses and various things that have many uses.
Things like duck tape,epoxy putty,fencing wire and electrical wire come in handy for roadside repairs.
Learning skills like how to make a radiator out of a 20 litre plastic jerry can are more useful than trying to cover every base with a spare part.

Put on new hoses and belts and keep your servicable old ones as spares. That way you know they will fit and will go on easy if you have to use them at 2am on a lonely road.

A diesel Hilux will take a lot to stop it from running and more than likely be unrepairable on the side of the road.

Another thing that depends on what spares you bring are where you are going. Are you staying to the main dirt road or less traveled dirt road or do you plan on taking 4x4 trails?

well the terrain is the mountains of afghanistan. i know a military guy whose going to be going through there in a hilux, he was looking for ideas of what to bring and what to prepare for. i figure the vehicle has had routine maintanance, just looking for some ideas incase i forgot something. anything else?

I'd probably be anal about replacing anything that might fail if I was heading there! I'd also want to make sure I didn't bring too many heavy extras so I could get maximum power when the Taliban figured out where I was!! Keep it layed out so that anything that does need fixing can be fixed in record time. Being stationary there would present problems that you do not have in many other areas.

I nice assault weapon and plenty of ammo oh....and the knowledge of how to use it.

Well I have a pretty full toolbox and I always take it with me in the bush, spare parts is tough to figure as age of vehicle intended route and local parts supply are unknown. Vehicle specific tools could be handy but restricted to ones not used for internal motor or g box repair. Cold chisels are super handy to undo anything a spanner or socket wont fit. Vise grips are like American Express, never leave home with out them. Extra engine oil at a pinch will go in anything and after a roll over the lack of it could be the one thing that stops you dead. A bottle of brake fluid to at least fill half of the brake system after you vise grip the other end off. Some bits of chain and bolts to anchor broken suspension and a piece af angle iron to brace a bent steering rod. A couple of Truck tyre patches and the glue, big ones with reinforcing cord in them to patch sliced tyre walls, better still a second spare tyre case and few spare tubes. Going somewhere really wierd how bout a Sat Phone, a DHL account and or a second vehicle of the same type.

been there, done that.

as for the vehicles getting routine maint. that's not that likely, it will be gone over occasionally but expect it to be a while, unless he/she is on a large base (KAF/BAF). If thats the case then they won't need to bring anything. I would say a hi-lift and base plate would be helpful as well as some chains, the bottle jacks are very inconvenient in that terrain and can't be used as a winching device. basic sockets, and if they know exactly what they are driving then a shop manual is good. The Hilux's get beat up pretty bad but they go forever. Oh and second on the ammo.


One more thing, tell them to take some basic woodworking tools, it is highly advisable to build a hard cover for the bed if the truck does not have one. It'll keep hands out of the back as well as tossed explosives. If they need more they can log into the CALL and find tons of stuff.
