i just bought the cv band clamps from pfran42 and i can't seem to find what kind of grease to add before banding these things. does anyone know for sure what kind of grease is in these things. i just need to add a small amount and i don't want to go to toyota. there has got to be a specific grease type used and a comparable alternative i can add/mix.

I couldn't find the specific Toyota creamy peanut butter looking grease either so I purchased a CV boot kit from Toyota for $30 and it came with 2 tubes of the sticky stuff. Kind of expensive but it was enough to top off all boots and now I have 1 new spare boot of each type plus a tube of the OEM grease in my emergency trail repair kit.

I got a couple of tubes of CV-specific grease from O'Reillys...but my CV's are leaking so bad that I've decided to pull both axles and reboot them. Toyota OEM is what I'll be using, although I'm not sure what is different about it.

CV grease is moly grease, I'm not sure if the specific grease sold as "CV grease" is different from a good quality moly grease. Generally use moly grease on sliding applications, don't use it on roller bearings. Use moly on driveshaft telescoping joint (sliding spline joint), general purpose grease on driveshaft U-joint bearings (roller bearings). CV joints have balls in them, but they don't roll as much as slide, so use moly grease.
