What kind of dog crate do you have?

How tall is it? I just want to be sure that the crate is tall enough so that he will be able to stand up in it when he gets fully grown.

Why? Once he gets old enough (and house trained) he'll just go in there to rest or sleep for the night. Unless you plan on leaving him in there while you're out. In that case, I guess you should get a taller one.

My lab isn't tall at all. Probably closer to 85 lbs as well.

I won't be gone for more than a few hours at a clip. Five at the most on gamedays or late nights. I just want to be sure he's comfortable. I'm going to try to train him where he will go get in it when I tell him to and stay even with the door open. That would help when I have somebody over.

When I was working for Petmate we tried to switch the system of measurement for kennel to dog from weight to shoulder height. Hell if I can remember the system though.

There are plastic crates that'll fit a 90lb Dobbie. That's no sweat. Check a feed store or Tractor Supply. I think we had the Vari Kennel/Pet Porter Giant rated to 110# dogs.

Also - in the Petmate line, the Vari Kennel retails at a higher price than the Pet Porter, but they are the exact same kennel except for the color - same mold, same plastic content, same hardware.

And wob makes a good point about the kennel being a "safe place" - never use it for punishment, never give him hell when he's in there, etc.

Another point - when it comes to clean-up, you only really have to worry about that for a short time while he's still a puppy. They'll learn to "hold it" if you get them on a good training schedule. Overall, dogs do not like to crap where they sleep/eat/live.

It's a lot of work to do it right, but it's not hard.

I like the looks of the one you just linked to, Swank. I'm not worried at all about the training. I've read and read and they all say the same basic things. I trained my parents shepherd the basics in a few days.

Good!

There's nothing I hate more than someone who thinks crate training = putting the crate in the back yard and sticking the dog in it for 8-9 hours.

On the big Vari Kennel, when I was there, our customer service people got a call (my boss wound up having to handle it) from this guy in KY. Somehow he'd set the thing on fire in the middle of his living room and called us trying to say that it spontaneously combusted. He also wanted us to pay for the damages to his carpet and floor, as well as replace the kennel.

Never underestimate the ingenuity/stupidity of other people. :hillbilly:

Spontaneously combusted, heh. He must have forgotten about the small gauge electrical cord running through the sawdust directly under the crate...

I have two huge collapsible mesh steel crates like the ones from petsmart.

It worked great for training.

As the Dane grew I cut one side out of each and wired them together.

Now I have a 4x6x4 monster.

He sleeps in there on occasion and goes in when we have meals. We don't close the door much.

theoretically, we would put him in there if we had a house pest who didn't like big dogs, but why would I want someone like that in my house?

I have two collapsible steel wire ones. They work great. Especially because they even fit the the trunk of most cars. The space savings is nice if you travel where you need to take them along.

All the dober's I've known have fit in the Vari-Kennel/Pet Porter 400's. I've got more than I'm using, maybe we should barter? ;)

Also have the folding wire. GREAT for traveling, and my girl dober chose that as 'her' box anytime it was available, even over the plastic ones.

Also have the soft-sided mesh. Used to compete in agility, and this is the crate for between runs. Have seen a couple destroyed by dogs who chose not to respect the boundries.

If you think you'll ever fly w/him: Vari-Kennel. If he's going to go road tripping w/ya: folding wire.

HTH

Looking forward to pix...

I have one like this:

It came with the dog when I got him. It comes apart for storage. It is very sturdy and we used it to crate train our lab and then flew him to the Caribbean and back in it. The thing is 12 years old and held up great. We hve the biggest they make and I think they are available at K-Mart.

I found one like this at the local pet store yesterday for $145. A wire one of the same size was about $75. I think I'll go ahead and spring for the plastic one.
I am going to pick up the little fella after work today. I think he might be called "Rocker." I also considered "Diesel" and "Achilles."

$145 ???

I thought they were cheaper than that. I believe, gasp, WalMart sells the big ones.

We've had a couple of the clamshell plastic ones and a big wire one.

Now we're back down to just one Lab and she's got a double coat. The plastic ones just didn't have enough airflow so any time she played in her pool or got rained on, the blanket would get wet, and end up stinking like mildew within a day or two. No problems with the wire crate, and the removeable bottom tray is handy just in case.

I bought the big vari kennel. Put him in the crate last night. I also put a castrol box in the back to try to make the crate a little bit smaller. I up this morning and he was sleeping in the castrol box, lol. That box is taller than he is. He must have had to jump to in the thing. He didn't use the bathroom all night in there, so we are off to a good start already!

cute pup...you still overpayed for that crate though.:flipoff2:

What do you have, fine ass furniture? I've owned about 10 dogs, and none of them have ever gone in a crate. :flipoff2:
