I did do a search but need some more help. My 83 60 has an exhaust leak under the hood, I can not find the exact location. When the truck is cold it is worse than when it is warm. It seems to be stealing a lot of power from the truck, I do also get a little backfire between shifts, atleast you can hear but not so bad that it scares people walking but it will turn a head. I am not even sure it has an exhuast leak but it sound like it when you step on the pedal. The motor had the manifold replaced 20k ago. Any help would be great.

check the joint between the manifold and the lead pipe going to the cat.
mine has a tell-tale whiteness to it. drove me nuts, because i could hear what i thought was a hole, but this is what it was. also the joints at both ends of the cat were leaking too.

1. Where the EGR 'supply' pipe joins under #6 (rear most) exhaust port;
gasket should have been relpaced during manifold replacement....

2. Check bolts ( and if ya can get to 'em - nuts on stud) holding
manifild to head; esp 'bottom' bolt firewall side of carb
( I think tween #3 ex and 4-5 intake); mine seems to loosen up...

3. Using few feet of garden hose as stethascope, 'snoop' aroound and listen...

"typical" depends on your particular truck but that being said, check and retorque every connection point on your exhaust system starting with the manifold and working your way towards the tail pipe. don't forget your EGR J-tube.

was the replaced manifold new or reconditioned? was the work performed by Toyota or???

metal expands when heated, contracts when cooled which helps explain why the noise is more pronounced when the engine is cool. my guess is that you've got a loose connection on one of the many mating surfaces in the exhaust system that is compensated for when the motor gets hot and all of that steel expands.

just my 2¢, take it for what it's worth
