What is the difference between an HJ45 and HJ47 Troop Carrier?

Engine was the main difference but the hj45 will have items specific to 72-80 cruisers like 4 speed, round bezel unless it's a 79-80 etc. the hj47 (80-85) will most likely be 5 sp. Square bezel etc. I could see someoverlap in body items etc. but the main designation of the 45 and 47 was the engine. I would guess engine swap. Is this the one in FLA?

I think the differences are similar to the 40-42 relationship. Big eye springs and splitcase on the 47

That being said the BJ45 had those features and ran right to the end of '84. Ther never was a BJ47 that I know of.

It is not the one in FL. This one is in my neighborhood but I have not had a chance to look at it yet. He said that it was an '81 HJ45 with a 2H. As far as I know it is not for sale. I looked at an Aus. spec. HJ47 ('82 I think) and it had a 4 spd trans. Any idea when Aus. spec troopies got disk brakes? I am getting itch for a Troopy and am trying to figure out the differences...

dunno on that one.. and I think you may see drums later than normal. Personally I wouldn't be that worried if you really wanted a troopy, just swap in a disc axle.

Good luck. Nice web page on your 82 :)

Otis, Disc Bake Aust seem to suggest that the 45 got discs in 9/79 and the 47 in 1980.

hj47 = 2h motor 4litre or something, disc brake front
hj45 = H motor = 3.6 litre, drum brakes

other changes are a running change type thing. the larger spring bushings, gas tank moved from under the seat, and square bezel are not coincided with a model change. this happened in 79, hj45 continued till mid 1980. hence an early hj45 will have a different tub and spring bushings to a late hj45. the hj47 was introduced late 1980.

the options for the troopy for sale include:

it was built early 1980 or before, and has the wrong date (i.e. took a while to be sold or something).
the guy either doesn't know a H from a 2H, or has swapped them. easy to do, all toyota 6 cylinders from that era basically bolted up to each of the gearboxes available (except those boxes behind the 4 cylinders... this one had a longer input shaft on the transmission)

or more likely it's a Hj47.
