a little black cover. to prevent you from pushing it in. That is the shift lock disabler just incase say, you blow your brake light fuse from your trailer and you cant shift out of park...that will let you do it. I wont tell you how i know that.

Did you recently do the Ipod install yourself?

Maybe the little plastic cover popped off when the trim around the shifter was pulled off. Check your foot well areas, and around the base of the seats. Maybe also pop the shifter/console trim back up and look in the cavity beneath.

It's a small black squarish piece of plastic that covers that release switch.

Hopefully you will luck out and find it. Otherwise, a nice small piece of electrical tape ought to cover that white plastic.

actually, it wouldnt come off when you take the center console off. It is apart of its own trim peice. Could be laying around somewhere in the car though.

I have not done an ipod install. I have been running the ipod off a tape player. I will check the floor thoroughly though. I agree that it might have dropped off somewhere on the floor.

I could shift from any position to the next without applying the brakes which is how I like it.. there is no button to push on the shifter either.. Is there a law in the states that requires this feature to be installed?

I remember when I had a 95 Grand Cherokee in Colorado ( Yes, I owned a Jeep :grinpimp: ) that Chrysler sent me a letter to install a shift lock at the dealership for free.. When I took my car to the dealer for service I said I didn't want them to install it and they didn't.. so at that time I assumed it wasn't required by law etc.. did that change?

IPOD seat

Even if you don't install an IPOD cradle of some sort, you might consider replacing the oblong plastic cap just north of the shifter with the cup available from Toyota. The IPOD fits there just great.

I lost the part number but it is on Mud somewhere, or somebody may have it handy.

there if a shift-lock intergrated with the brake light system. If the brake light circuit doesnt work, then you cant shift out of park. To disable that feature incase of the problem i stated above...you can depress that button and shift it into gear. Or say your key is stuck and you cant turn it to the on position, you can depress that and shift it into neutral to get it on a tow truck or something like that.

I just picked up the cup you are talking about 20 minutes ago at Power Toyota in Buena Park, CA to hold my cell phone. The Toyota Part # is: 58839-60040

Retails for $20.26, but they discounted it to $13.00 just because I asked nicely if they could save me a bit of $$.

You could probably get that missing plastic cap for a couple of bucks. I would get it covered before too much gunk slops in.

Glad to find out it about the brake light fuse. I blew one installing the Kaymar rear bumper, about that time I had trouble shifting, out of park. I wadded up a McDonalds Straw wrapper and jammed it under the cover to hold that button down. I've since replaced the fuse of course. But I had forgotten about the shifter lock, that was two years ago. Time to fish that straw wrapper out of there.
