'Want to put a roof top rack on our '71 FJ40 with the hard top. When shopping for roof racks, I see that most manufacturers give options of 5", 8", or 11" high mounting brackets. Can anyone give me any feedback as to what is the best height to get? Thanks!!!

I'll have to measure this one but it was built by a friend of mine. It does sit a little low in the middle. I am considering cutting the brackets loose and running a piece of square tubing under each end to lift it up.

I just tried an old Thule rack I have over the weekend. It has the short risers--5" I believe. It only cleared the high point of the roof if I attached the towers at the very front and very back. The distance was too far to mount a bike rack. And if you have accessories that hang below the bars (or even connectors) it would be too tight. Also, the roof toes in above the cab, so the Thule feet worked at the very front, but not by much.

Yes, 6" is the minimum for the center of the roof cap on an FJ40 if you're using the rain gutter clamps. That is even a bit close for some people......

We sell the 6" versions.....just sayin'....... :)

Your rain gutter clamps look heavy-duty. Would you be able to configure me something to work with a Thule basket? I would need some way to mount some type of crossbars to your gutter mounts. Thanks!

x2 on the DiamondRax Equip. I've got mine and get compliments on it all the time. It's completely functional and sturdy as all get out. I got the triple wide legs for mine and it doesn't budge. Plus Greg a decent guy. Very trustworthy.
Just my .02
