I made some progress painting the engine this weekend. I am cleaning and painting everything while I have the engine bay open.

In bigger news was able use a new part I bought in 2016. For the win.

I like how the frame is coming out looks very nice. 👍 when you ordered that part back in 2016 I was a Junior in highschool man how time flies. 😂
My first new FJ40 I was 4 years out of high school…now I am 4 years on social security! Yep…time flies

Sandblasted the bottomside of the rear fenders. PO had sprayed bed liner in them which was flaking off. Got all the loose stuff off, painted rust encapsulator where needed and re-sprayed with raptor bed liner. Also painted about 1/2 the frame, from the doors back, with Eastwood frame paint. Will tackle the front fenders and rest of the frame next weekend.

I learned it from the legend. This is such a great video on so many levels. How to go about a carb rebuild. How to take care on the steps. Kindness and putting people first. Marlin passed away a few days after this video was made. I have shared this in multiple places on Mud, but worth doing here.

Amazing video, thanks for sharing.

Amazing video, thanks for sharing.
The best part of the video to me is the fact that it shows Marlin’s will to drop everything to help someone in need, prolly why his shop looked like it did, who could ever have time to stop and clean.

I remember a Roundup where a friend smoked a birf on the afternoon of the first day. Parts were cobbled together by Georg and others and the rebuild commenced. Marlin was one foot removed the whole time, helping and offering pointers. The threads on the spindle were buggered up and Marlin reached in his front pocket pushing aside the pens and pencils he always carried and whips out a thread repair file, and proceeds to give several of us a lesson on how to use the tool. I carry one now, thanks to Marlin.

I finally got around to watching this video. What a gracious man Marlin must have been. His video just helped me hopefully solve a problem I’ve been diagnosing with my ‘75 and how it’s been lurching lately. At the end, Marvin mentioned that he always turns the idle mixture screw 3 1/2 turns out. I was always going on others advise and starting with 11/2 turns and using the lean drop method on vacuum. It’s never idled smooth before. Turns out that his method seems to have solved it and it seems to drive and idle fine now. He is still helping people beyond the grave 🙂 Thank you Marlin!

Just an update... Diesel pump (rear) rebuilt, seems there's a special 3 pronged tool to adjust the idle screw housing as the garage when the Ute was being serviced, tried to adjust it but couldn't undo the housing, mechanic broke 2 pliers trying to slacken it off...
Handbrake cable is 'well' stretched (not snapped) but U/S & this recently replaced cable & fixings needs replaced now.. next up the clutch pedal has dropped 2 inches within 3' of the floor so it looks like a new clutch is on the horizon. (l'd planned to do it in the summer seems sooner will be best). Rear canopies away for repair/reinforcing due to strong wind/gale damage tearing the corner edges. Anticipating a summer of ute jobs to be started & finished...in 6 weeks time.

Re-bled and adjusted the front brakes. The 40 is pulling to the left when braking, so I suspected some air got into the right side of the front brakes when I replaced the left front wheel cylinders.
Took it for the quick drive to check. Still pulling to the left when braking.
So next up is going to be checking the adjustment of the rear brakes.

During the quick drive to check the brakes, I noticed a small electrical gremlin. When the brake lights are on, it's causing the left turn signal lights to illuminate. So probably an issue in the rear combination lamp grounding. I don't normally drive the 40 at night, so who knows how long this has been going on. Just another thing to chase down.
