Found a 79 FJ40 at a wholesale auction, haven't actually seen anything but the pictures but I don't know what engine this is? Obviously a diesel, turbo conversion probably, hopefully a Toyota?
Auction is next week, want to find out before I spend too much on it

It dose't look like toyota to me,the tappet cover looks too square. The air intake is made out of 2" plastic plumbing pipe.

I dont think its a Toyota either,it reminds me of the 4 cyl Cummins they use behind the Onan generators.
It wouldnt put me off buying it if the conversion was done properly .AN american diesel is going to be whole lot easier to buy parts for and maintain.
I would check the amount of noise it makes if possible.

I hate that plastic plumbing pipe on engines. What people dont realise is that when it gets old, it goes hard and brittle and if it breaks,it gets sucked into the engine.
Those silicon elbows are cheap these days and there is no need to use plumbing hardware

Onan L634T, never seen one, have to do a little research on it, the rest of the 40 looks pretty nice, no rust, not a restore but in good condition, big lift (6" and 35" tires maybe?)
Anyone familiar with that engine?
Or who might have done this conversion, who it might have belonged to? It is at an auction in Orlando, Fl

Good motors parts are still available but you really need the cpl and serial number to ge
t the right parts and that should be on the back right side of the block or on a tag on the front left. 120 HP typically. The PVC must be for air intake to the turbo, check for blow by on the hose coming out the top or unscrew the oil cap and see if it jumps from too much blow by. There are different configurations and you only want the automotive model not one from a fixed RPM application such as a compressor or a genset..The automotive ones I have seen typically have the air intake in front and exhaust in the rear.. If you find a CPL and serial number Cummins can tell you the application.Cool find.

I probably won't be able to get any information from the engine, just pictures, doesn't even have it listed as a diesel.
It is an auction for dealers only, most of them won't have a clue what it is so it could go cheap.
Will keep my eye on it

I think they are really a Cummins 6AT . Some of those Onan 6 cyl were made as direct replacement for chev 6 cyl petrol engines like the 292ci.
There use to be someone on MUD who reckoned his turboed Onan 6 could outrun a 12HT.

I have 3 of the cummins 6at engines from UPS trucks. One in a '54 gmc 3/4 ton with a turbo 400, one in a '59 f350 pickup with an sm 465 and the third running in a stand in the shop. Planning to put # 3 in my recently acquired '85 fj 60 after somebody buys my gmc. I'm quite knowledgeable about them, but have a mechanical question about the hydraulic lifters. Anybody on here know if I can adjust the lifters with it running, like on a chevy six? Also, just like to know of anybody else out there running these things.... My kid put up a youtube video of the 6at running in my '59 with a straight pipe. Nice whistle, if you are inclined to like that sort of thing....:steer: (59 f350 with cummins 6at) on youtube

I read the instructions in the manual and it is an interference engine so it has to be done just right. It was a very strange procedure and if done wrong the valves would be too tight and maybe hit the piston!!

Thanks, I also read the procedure in the manual, but seems like the hydraulic lifters bleed down, or a couple are 'squishy'. I have never adjusted hydraulics before that one time. It's just hard to tell when the lash is just right. I'm used to regular solid lifters. Did them on my 2f just last night.

I'm not acquainted with the quirks of hydraulic lifters but I can imagine that they are intended to be virtually solid when running as fluid couldn't leak out fast enough if they are within tolerance and reduce the adjustment intervals by being self adjusting. I don't know that you could detect that by feel or how quickly they bleed down. I'm sure there is some sort of procedure for that too. I like the simplicity of the 2f but I think the world has advanced a bit and I need to get up to speed!!

I would just replace them, but in the 6at it involves removing the cylinder head. arrrrgh

My 6AT FJ60 could out run my friends HJ61. But it was slower off the line.
