I'm sure this has been answered before, but i couldn't find a complete answer.

The rear of my '83 BJ60 is sagging, but i can't afford new springs so i think i'm going to go for mana fre add-a-leafs.

- What other parts do i need to order?

- Does the whole spring have to come out to install the add-a-leaf or is it possible to just loosen off some parts and slide them in?

Thanks very much!

You will proabably need a new longer centering pin. I would order two new ones too.

You don't need to pull the springs but if you do it that way you will probably want new bushing. I just pulled a leaf on mine the other day and it took about 30-45 mins.

You wil have to pull the centering pin and other leafs depending on if the new added leaf goes on the top or in between current leafs.

you can do this while the springs are still on.

as was said above new center pins.

2 good sized c clamps to hold the springs together, and to put it all back together.

Make sure you get the long add a leafs.

you'll need the "absence of" the problem with stiff springs...

ever thinkin of taking a leaf from just another pack of leaf springs and adding it in? it probably wouldn't be as stiff as the add'a'leaf and would be cheaper but i dunno....i never did it.

I don't think you'll need much more...maybe someone else will chime in.

count on new u-bolts too. 23 years of the BC elements = removal with zip wheel, torch, or impact gun. In any case most spring shops will tell you they're not safe to re-use.

Pretty much covered in the posts above. I've added add-a-leafs, and it's easy. Definatly use the long ones. Short ones suck.

Remove u-bolts.
Lower axle.
Clamp leafs.
Remove center pin.
Remove clamps.
Watch leaves fall apart.
Reassemble using new add-a-leaf and clamps.

Getting them realigned is hard, until you find the trick. Use a long tapered drift and a hammer. Drive this up the center hole to keep the leaves aligned as you reassemble.

New center bolts are important, as are new u-bolts.

Remember to re-torque the u-bolts every few hundred miles. I find it takes 3 times before they stay at 90 ft lbs.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I already have new u-bolts installed, so that should speed things up a fair bit.

Thanks again,
Mark

reason they recomend new ubolts is because once you tighten them up they stretch .And after you losen and tighten them again for a second removalthey may not be as strong as they once were due to stretching them even more. May lower the tensil strenth. corct if im wrong guys?

I think you're right in principle midas, but in this case 90lbs/ft on bolts this size does not indicate to me that they are one-time-tighten only. My ubolts were brand new around four months ago. Even on aircraft, parts like this are reused (within specific limitations of course)
