hi, we lost our dog a while ago. kidney failure. of course we did everything we could but it just didn't work out. was no bringing them back. we are finally getting through mourning her, though of course we will never forget her, but it is time to begin looking for another rescue.

some things about us... we have no kids. we have our own house with a yard which is fenced in. we are responsible dog owners that properly train and socialize our dogs.

our last dog was sheltie or border collie or your best guest is as good as ours mix. she was smart, agile and kept us on our toes

we did like her size and temperament. she was about 35 lbs. here she is outpacing my parents border collie

what are we looking for? we will rescue the dog. we are big fans of mutts. we would like to get a pup based on a breed that appears to be dominant. ex. shepherd mix or sheltie mix.

what dogs do we currently like as the dominant breed?
german shepherd
sheltie
australian shepherd
standard poodle
golden

what breeds are we staying away from (so far)?
border collie
beagle
blood hound
pit bull
most terriers
i hope i didnt offend anyone with these breeds but their is a certain part of each characteristic that is just not for us.

so... now that i have bored you all to death please suggest a breed and why you think its a good companion dog... please post a pic if you have em...

We have a 7 month old Golden Retriever and Chocolate Lab. My favorites.

I also really liked my chocolate lab/dalmation mix. He was an awesome dog, faster than s*** and could nearly jump over a 6' fence. He was the best frisbee dog I ever had. I miss him :crybaby:

i have had cattle dogs for years as pets . well behaved easy to train and very smart animals .. best dog i have ever owned .. buy a pure breod from a good breeder .. they are a good protector .. and a great trail dog .. mine rides and hikes everywhere with me ..they are a tough agile dog with few health problems . look them up on line ..

Golden. Best dog ever. Smart and fantastic personality.

But the shedding sucks.:bang:

x2

I grew up with a golden retreiver and now I have one about 10 months. Very smart, well behaved, great dog. But they do shed and mine is about 80lbs.

Also their popularity is their curse. there is alot of over breeding and in breeding. so if you do go through a breeder research them.

Or if you rescue a mut a golden shepard might be kinda cool but if its a male it will be huge!

It really depends on your lifestyle

we lead an active lifestyle, want a durable dog. it will go hiking and camping with us. 4 wheeling of course. it will be walked 3x a day along with playing in the yard and park. it will go to obedience classes and if it takes to it, maybe some agility.

and how much room you have for the dog. Do you have a fenced in yard or live in an apartment, etc.

as stated in the first post we have a house and a yard which is fenced in.

Why do you hate beagles?

i am not a beagle hater at all, they just have some typical traits that i am not interested in having. thats all.

Dont choose a dog by type.

Let a rescue choose you.

sounds good in theory but in reality, there are just some traits i dont want to deal with in certain breeds. you cant ignore them. they are there.

goldens... my wifes father offered to breed his one last time and give us a pup. seriously considering and that way we also know both parents and the lineage.

i do like them. how does yours handle stranger and new situations? i have heard they can be very weary and defensive.

really it sounds like you already know what you want.

My vote is for labs. I have 2 of them. Smart dogs, loyal, good with kids, love to play. They shed but at least it shorter hair than a golden. Another thing I consider a plus is they bark loudly and tend to look intimidating to strangers (but are really not aggressive) so a person has to think twice before they approach.

Sorry to hear about your dog Pete.

Our current dog, Luna is a Lab/Golden mix. Great dog, but a shedder for sure. She's only about 60 pounds. At 9 years old she still acts like a puppy most of the time.

Our first dog, who died of cancer at age 4, :( was a Border Collie Mix of some sort, fantastic dog but really high energy for our more sedentary lifestyle.

If I were doing it again, I'd go with a purebred Lab, they are really just great all around dogs and brilliant family members.

Didn't read if you have kids--for me I went with a boxer because I read a bunch of good things about how good they are with kids--even small ones. My wife also has allergies to pet hair so I wanted a short hair breed. They are very active though and require a lot of exercise and play-time.

I missed it the first time as well.

I have 3 of them....but they like to work. Leary i don't really think so it is all in the way they are treated. They can be tough to house train when pups but you just need to find that thing that works with that pup. In all honestly they will defend to the very end. Heelers have 2 bad health traits 1 is well known for bad hips and the other is eyesight. The cool thing is the live a very long time.. dads lived a full 19 years and the oldest on record is 26 years HUMAN YEARS .

Other normal traits keep them away from cattle and horses unless you want them to work:D.

Heelers love kids;) My mama dog considers the kids a job so do not try to change that.
They love cars as decavo said....and they make excellent cave dogs... outdoor dogs in general....trustworthy.. none of mine need a leash:cheers: But there is plenty of good dogs to choose from.

Chesapeake bay retriever that is what I am going to get next. Vizsla, and rhodesian ridgeback I am also considering.

My golden and choco lab tried to kick the s*** out of a psychopath that was coming into our camp after my wife. My boy and I had left to hike, so she was alone with the pups.

Not on your list, but Dobermans...just a fantastic, extremely intelligent, loyal, clean, and athletic dog! We will always have at least two at home!
