That is the problem I have - the cleaning side of things - you get it all cleaned up and then install a nicely greased up bearing!

If I could find a high temp liquid metal style product I would be tempted to use that to fill in the wear and then sand it back to 'as new' proportions and run with that.

My concern is that with a groove in the bottom part of the stub, the whole hub and driveshaft will be operating at a bit of an angle - OK, not much when the grove is around .5mm, but it might cause a problem.
