What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Well made point @cruisers and company, essentially by definition LS swaps are a Frankenstein of sorts and that’s where my level of confidence is out the door trusting myself to pull this off. So then becomes a question of cost at a well known pro shop turbo 1fz with rebuilt engine or LS. I might have to visit you Johnny.

I was probably overly meticulous about cleaning these. I have a 30 liter ultra sonic cleaner, parts washer, 100 Quart boiler (home-made hot tank), and then used a Dremel, wire brush on drill, and elbow grease.
Yeah, I figured. There's no magic bullet for stuff like that, I don't think - just elbow grease and tons of work. I've watched videos of people cleaning undercarriages and drivetrains with dry ice machines, but those things are commercial grade and stupid expensive. Would be cool to get local access to something like that, but I don't know who does it around my neck of the woods.

Anyway, great job on that.

Thanks. This was my first time using the FIPG and I clearly used too much, but otherwise very happy with how it turned out.
If it's not squeezing out, how can you possibly know it's sealing? Fine job, AFAIC.

Finished replacing the replaced carpet. As part of the rebuild I was trying to get cruiser as quiet as possible and bought mass backed carpet. Big Mistake, Huge. Do not, under and circumstance, buy mass backed carpet unless you enjoy the odor of driving behind a tar truck. 4 years of airing it out did nothing to change it.

Replaced with factory front and standard aftermarket rear. THE SMELL IS GONE! Do yourself a favor, just buy the factory carpet if you are upgrading. Sooo much easier to install and no having to think it though. The rear is NLA.:frown:

Then I introduced her to her new plaything. I know she will be jealous because I will be splitting my time between them. Kind of like a second child.

Finally got around to adding some 200 AMP MRBF fuses on both the driver and passenger (+) post. I got the idea from @Delta VS

Yes it does look really close to the top of the battery box and in fact it is, but I have confirmed it is not hitting but for my own piece of mind I am thinking about swapping over to Group 31 batteries with an automotive post vice the marine style post or something else I might do it add a common buss bar. But swapping to the automotive style post will probably be easier. It will allow me to lay the MRBF fuse flat giving me more piece of mind.

I added another ground and you can see it running to the back of the firewall but it is more than likely going to get moved to the cylinder head or the engine block. Just need to decide the best route to both.

Also, I keep the wire in check I used a "P Clamp using one of the mounting bolts from the cruise control bracket. It is visible in the above picture but here is a closer picture.

And last I installed my Hella horns that I got for Christmas. They do not work yet, as I need to chase down some issues with the horn. The stock ones didn't work either, so I am assuming the brass contact in the steering wheel or a fuse/relay.

Worst sounding horns ever (I have them, too).

It’s been a busy weekend in the garage.

Transfer case re-assembled with 3.1:1 low range gears and 10% under drive
Disassembled everything around the engine bay needed to get the head off
Got the head off (first time doing this)
Realized that I needed to take the upper and lower oil pans back off (I just put them back on a month ago)
Got the timing chain cover off

If it's not squeezing out, how can you possibly know it's sealing? Fine job, AFAIC.
Good to know! I learned after I posted this, that I am putting enough FIPG on when I had to remove the oil pans I had just put back on a few weeks ago.

Well hopefully they do not sound like a Corolla like the old ones did. Honestly I should have gone with the factory replacements that are like 400 500 mhz.

The previous owner of my rig had installed Hellas. I hated how they sound. High pitched and tinny, like I was driving a Prius. And I love using my horn. Every day. All the time. LOL

My first mod after I bought my 80 was to rip them out. I swapped them with these horns from Amazon and they have a tone that tells others I'm in a truck and not a go-cart. I'm happy with them.

Where did your order your Mass-Backed carpet?

As far as buying factory replacement carpet, I thought it's NLA for my Oak/Brown color scheme...

I'm glad I saw your post. I was just about to order carpet from stockinteriors.com and upgrade to the "Ultra Plus Cut Pile" and they do have an option to add "Mass Backing" for $160 more.

The PO of my rig put some acoustic mat under the rear carpet area and doors. I'm going to bring that up to the front firewall and do the roof as well. I think the Mass Backing is probably overkill anyway if you've already applied some acoustic mat, but if it smells, then that would be a no-go for me for sure.
