Hey all,
There are 2 lines running from the front passenger side engine compartment to the tranny. They run along the inside of the frame. They are mostly hard tubing, with about a 6 inch segment which is rubber and ferruled at each end spliced into the hard tubing. They are both rusty as hell and the lower one is leaking what appears to be tranny fluid. I looked in the manual, and couldnt find the name of what it is so I can replace it! Do you all know what this might be?
Its an 88 FJ62 3FE.

Thanks,
Chicago

Tranny cooler lines

Thanks Mace,
Thats what I thought they were, but I wasnt sure. Are they under a fair amount of pressure that I should be concerned with when removing them:eek: ? Should I drain all the coolant?

Not coolant, tranny fluid. they connect the tranny to the radiator

With the truck in park there is no pressure other than gravity..

Thanks man I appreciate it

While you are at it there are some other things you should do at the same time if you want your A440F to continue to function.

I would use the oportunity to do a passive flush of the tranny and replace the screen filter. You should also add an auxillary tranny cooler to the system.

There are some who have just replaced the hard metal parts of the lines with high quality petroleum rated hose.

I would recommend checking the files section of the 3FE yahoo list. Look in lessons learned folder for tranny flush, aux cooler, lines etc. There is a wealth of information on the subject. It is not hard to do but you need the info first.

Cheers,
Dunbar

Thanks Dunbar,
That is helpful info. I was planning on dropping the tranny pan and replacing the fluid filter etc. Im not quite sure how in the hell Im going to get those nuts free, theyre messed up pretty good from the rust. I was actually thinking of replacing the hard line too as long as Im at it..."ounce of prevention..."
Where is this 3FE link everyone keeps talking about and how do you get to it?

The legendary 3FE list can be found at this location:

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/3FE/

You will need to request membership and KLF (on MUD) or Ken Flesher in the real world will grant you permission to join. Then look at the files section for new members FAQ.

The 3FE list is made up of a unique group of friends who go by first names. We tolerate an incredible amount of chat and even a bit of conflict. Most of us are tough enough to hang through the rare tough times.

Hope to see you there!

Dunbar

Oh, and death to bin Laden.

tranny lines

Yep... 3FE group is super, go there for all your FJ62 needs and chit chat sessions. they helped me with, among many other things, my transmission problems including the hard line swap and flush.

Yes, PB blaster or Sea foam Deep Creep those threads for a few days to loosen things up a bit. The connections are HARD to break without breaking other things. Use two wrenches, wear rubber gloves and dirty clothing. I had bad rust too. Had to use the frame and tires as a brace for leverage to break the threads loose. Good luck.
