What are the symtoms of a bad EGR?

Just this evening 6pm, after driving 15miles this morning 10am with no problem, I started getting engine shutter. I just tried to start it up again tonight and was fine for 2 min. warmup but started to shutter after I started to drive.

Could this be EGR or the fact that I cleaned my engine bay last weekend. Used Gunk and Simple Green with water to rinse. I covered the Distibutor cap to protect from water.

Any ideas guys?

A stuck open EGR will not idle. if you jar it loose it will idle fine until you drive it under the conditions that make it open, then it will have no idle again. When a car comes in with a no idle symptom in the days before IAC motors, I used to tap on the EGR first thing. If the idle came back, it was a simple diagnoses.

A stuck closed EGR will not affect driving in any way. The car may ping under load when hot more often, but might not. It will throw a MIL light in engines that monitor EGR flow like those found on 95 and later OBDII FZEs. P0401 IIRC

We would need the year of your truck to diagnose your shudder. It kinda sounds like a MAF, but it could be a lot of things.

Thanks for your detailed explanation. The Cruiser is a 95 with about 73k miles.

Could it be water from rinsing the engine and got some on those plastic wire connectors? Anyway I was thinking of stopping at a Autozone this afternoon for a diagnosis to get a error code. My check engine light is on now. How do I translate a engine code anyway?
thanks

I don't recommend engine cleaning, but if you're compelled to do so then the very best thing to do immediately after is take it for a freeway drive of at least a half hour. This will dry it out thoroughly. The very worst thing to do is clean an engine in the drive and then leave the car sitting.

Did you cover the alternator?
