What adapter to what? Im lost...

Im found deals I cant resist on a 4.3/tranny. What is the best adapter out there?

Would my stock tranny hold up to the 4.3?
Would it be better to go with the 4.3/auto/toycase?

Im looking for strength, reliability, and longevity (all apply to a heavy foot, :flipoff2:

First, you can not use your stock tranny. Even if you insisted on a stick shift (poor choice), it would have to be 1985-plus with removable bellhousing. Since you have to get different tranny anyway, I recommend the GM overdrive auto---about three times stronger than the Toyota stick tranny. The auto tranny choice will depend upon the year model of 4.3 engine you end up with. 1992-older engine will use a 700R4 tranny, 1993-newer will use a 4L60E tranny. Adapter brand name/length will depend upon your transfer-case. If you have a top loader, by all means use our 1.5" thick adapter at $514. If you have a front loader transfer-case, your stuck with the 3 3/8" thick adapter at $569.
Since there are about a zillion questions with conversions like this, PM me with particulars on your truck and particulars on the engine/tranny you end up with, then I'll give you the whole long story as it applies to your choices.
 
what tranny do you have?

Unless it's a V6, I'd say no. Power corrupts, and absolute power, absolutely corrupts...i.e don't say, "I ain't gonna drive it like that" cause you know you will. (I sure as heckfire would)


I've read the ratings on the tranny bearings, but don't ask me where or what they are. I have since forgot them. The 4.3 is a freaking torque hawse for its size. And if you get the ratings of the bearings and the torque curve of the motor and put them side to side, you will see that you'll shortly be exceeding them.


truth be told though. I believe if you drive it like you own it, it'll be ok. But I rather just get an R series.

Keep in mind no gears, big tars, driving habits and stuff like that would add to its demise. IMO, the R series is just insurance.



But! I am a purist, so unless Toyota didn't make it, I doubt anything else will make it near any of my trucks...:D
 
I used the A/A bh, W56. Been nearly ten years and no trouble so far. Rubicon, Trek, Panamint all good.

There IS a R150 or two in the garage just in case...
