I'm installing a OME Dakar full med-heavy kit on my 62. I didn't have any problems with the front, but the back is giving me fits.

I've got the shakle in place (Anti inversion pin facing the front of the truck) and the alignment pin in place, but I cannot get the centering pin to line up (I did remove the original retaining braket).

If I jack the spring up I can get it close but not enough. What am I doing wrong here? Should the shakle face the opposite direction? I'm stumped.

I found that I needed a "come along" to pull the axle and pin into alignment. I wouldn't worry about using a "come along" for that purpose (just make sure you anchor it to the frame and the axle so you don't pull the truck off the jack stands).

Ive actualy been in this situation 3 or 4 times now. I used a regular floor jack to jack the axel up (i placed it under the diff) then used a ratchet strap to guide the rest of it into place (tied it to the end of the leaf spring and to the under body of truck) When i was doing this i always had 2 people. Made things alot easier!! Hopefully this helps.. if not i can try and explain things in a little more detail.

(kinda odd that your having troubles with back, it was the front which gave me hell!!)

I had probms w/my rear also. Axle was too far forward, and to the outside of the spring pin. BFH didn't do it. Comealong worked great to pull it back. (Great point about hooking it to the truck!!) I used a cheap sissors jack (with a piece of 2x4 as an extender) to push the spring away from the opposite spring. Really easy once you figure out the right tools to do the heavy lifting.

I had the same problem with my rear OME MEDIUM setup - scratched my head, saw the comealong - it did the trick but I felt like I was doing something illegal the whole time. Glad to hear others had the same difficulty.

i remember using my little bottle jack and a piece of 4x4 lumber
my biggest PITA was getting the pins out.

Did you disconnect the rear drive shaft?

I had the same problems installing my OME medium duty kit. I used a large 3' pipe of pipe with a jack under the rear diff and moved it where it needed to go. It was a headache and 2 people IMO are needed.

The front was a piece of cake!
