I have the typical leak in my oil pan caused by cracks in the welds where the protective plate attaches to the bottom of the pan.

I have no experience with welding but has anyone every tried to just weld around the entire circumference of interface of the protective plate and the pan itself?

I realize that this might be a little tricky (which is why I would take it to a weld shop) but it seems like this would seal everything up.

I brazed mine. It has worked out really well, so far. Then I filled up the "seam" between the skid and the pan with some RTV-type stuff so mud and dirt cannot get in there.

i heat mine up bend the plate down tight and weld all the way around ,degnols way will also work good luck

That is damn good idea....While I had my pan off a few weeks ago, i struggled to get all the dirt out of there before painting. I should have just filled it in. Hmmm.....

I have actually cut the rotten bottom out of the pan, then cleaned off the spotwelds and rust from the skidplat. Weld the skid to the pan, so it becomes the bottom of the pan. With .024 wire and a small MIG it is not difficult. Just takes a long time. Tack, tack, tack, clean, clean, tack some more,clean......

i don't see a prob with welding it, or brazing. but if you are gona do lik jf40jim, also not a bad idea i'd suggest TIG welding it. that's tungston inert gas. if you don't have the equipment / skill to do it i'd take it to a shop. it may not be so vital to nead this, but it's about the best weld you are going to get out of it. that or a good gas weld.

i'll have to look at mine now, see how it is. ....

I have found a shop locally that does high class machine work and TIG/MIG welding. I am going to have them take a look at it and give me an estimate. I may pay a little more but I would feel better having a shop known for high quality work do it than some inexperienced high school kid.

I will let you know the estimate next week.

I've had mine off I think 4 times now for various rounds of welding and repair. Looking back I should have just spent the $180 and bought a new pan. But if you are careful and can actually get it clean it will work out fine. I cut the edges of the plate off and welded them to the pan. Then it started leaking out below the drain plug, so on this last round I welded a smaller nut inside the old drain hole, put in a smaller plug, and JB welded over all my older questionable welds. Not a drop has hit the floor yet, but the motor's been in the truck for less than 24 hours.

Yeah, I am torn between repair and replace. I called Cdan the other day and got the price for a new pan, gasket, plug, and plug gasket and it is pretty reasonable, yet still expensive. Unless the sandblasting and welding estimates come in real cheap, I may just buck up and buy new and put silicon around the gap to ensure that nothing get in there.

I haven't seen one of the new updated pans in person but from photos I don't think they have the gap between the pan and plate like the older 40 pans. They are FJ60 pans I believe.

ive mig welded quite afew of the plates to the pan some almost 10 years ago and no leaks yet.now that all my 40s are done i may not have to do it again good luck.
