Hi all TLC friends out there!

I wonder if any of you have any experience welding brackets on to the rear axle tubing on the 1982 FJ45?

What I need is this little bracket marked 1. on the picture below. So, I heard that welding on cast iron needs lots of preheating. Which is quite annoying as I have just finished changing backing plates, packing the bearings, resealed the hubs and mounted new break assy.

I'm hoping that the tubes are made of cast steel, so I can cool the areas around the weld, and do some short burst of tack welding. I'm also a bit worried about warping. Is it safe to leave the axle shaft while welding? How to safely drain the tubs from diff fluid? What welding thread and shielding gas to use?

Any ideas and experiences and knowledge around this would be greatly appreciated.

Stamped steel, actually.

You adding a hand brake to a later full floater? Have a late model full floater I'm thinking of doing this too. What wheel base is it going on and what cable?

I use the original fj45 axle, but I took the brake drum backing plates and e-brake from a hj60 (1986 maybe). They fit right on without any mods if they have the same hole pattern mine had 4 studs. To get to the backing plate, the hubs need to come off. It is a good opportunity to change the wheel bearings and check the straitens of the axle shafts.

I'm going to use the 70 model brake cable with some modification. I think if one put this bracket (1.) in the right spot, only one wire cable needs to be recrimped.

Yep, forgot the 'mild' part.
