I've currently got a MillerMatic 175 MIG machine which has served me well for the 'cruiser projects, though 1/4" seems to be it's max comfort level for welding in one pass. I do run it on 220v through my dryer socket, though a 20amp 220v breaker is sufficient to run it (max draw is 19.8 amps).

I've been thinking about getting a TIG welder. The process fascinates me and I'd also like to do some 306/316 stainless welding for home brewing.

What I am considering is:

Selling my MillerMatic and getting a ThermalArc Fabricator 252i multiprocess machine. It does DC TIG, MIG and stick welding. It's got the higher amperage for welding thicker stuff. It looks like the company was purchased by Tweco.

My concern is first, this is a Chinese made machine (albeit a seemingly higher end machine). It can't be serviced locally, so it would need to be shipped to a service center. Also, most multi process stuff I've had the experience of using seems to not do any one of the things its supposed to very well. Sort of a Jack of All Trades, Master of None sort of deal.

Second Option.
Keep the MM175 and get a new Chinese (Everlast, Longevity) 200 amp DC TIG machine.

Third:
Keep the MM175 and get a used TIG welder locally.

-I found an older Miller MaxStar 150 locally on consignment, however, they are asking 1750 for the machine. A new one from Cyberweld.com is $1250 and then another 150 for a pedal Control so 1750 seems a bit ridiculous. $750 seems more in line.

I'd like to have a Inverter style machine. While I recognize that the transformer style machines are excellent and likely something I can find for a good deal, the size and weight is really too much for me to handle. I just don't have a place for a huge machine. I'd also like to have AC capability for welding aluminum, if necessary, however, I don't do much aluminum welding and I do have an O/A rig.

I did see this model and was impressed, however I know they make a tig/ stick that you can weld aluminum with but is not an option on this model.
If the inverter goes the mother board has to be replaced which may cost as mush as the machine.
Mine is a tig / stick Thermal D and has not had any issues in ten years.
